I really enjoyed this. I’ve always been fascinated with through-hiking and this is an awesome firsthand account. I didn’t read it all in one sitting, but here and there between other books. I feel like I would have gotten bored reading it all at once.

A very detailed and linear trail journal documenting David "Awol" Miller's thru-hike of the AT. As a total hiking novice I enjoyed Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods much more. Bryson writes with more color and humor and discusses some larger themes, while Miller's book is at times tedious with the descriptions of (seemingly) every single shelter he stayed at and every single hiker he met. That said, I think Miller's account would much better prepare a serious hiker for what to expect on a long hike. He provides myriad insights into the importance of sturdy, comfortable shoes, trail and shelter etiquette, preparation for changes in weather, and much more.

Makes me want to hike the AT!

I listened to this after listening to Wild. To compare the two writers would be a huge mistake. This was almost like a diary of hiking the AT. There was very little introspection or emotional depth given in this book. The transitions between sentences were jarring and many of the chapters left you wondering “ what?” While I admire him for hiking the AT, I feel that most folks would not be able to afford to eat out and stay at hotels for most of their trip. I feel a good editor was needed to leave out some passages and add some color to other passages.

I'm a sucker for good books about hiking. It makes me want to pack up my gear and hit a trail. Being that I'm 8 months pregnant, that's not going to happen for a while but this guy, even though he's not the greatest writer (he's not a professional so it's acceptable), he makes you feel like you're with him on this journey meeting and hiking with other thru-hikers. I love books about thru-hiking the AT because even though it's on my bucket list to hike, it will most likely never happen. This guy had some serious foot and knee issues and to see him persevere was just awesome. Highly recommend this book. :)

I really appreciated that despite having read/watched many items on the AT, Miller provides descriptions of areas and parts of thru-hiking that none of them had touched on. It was interesting to hear his perspective, as well as very informative as a perspective future hiker.

Very interesting read. I feel like it was informative and fun, but still let's you know the trials he endured.
