I had heard so many great reviews about this book but I just didn’t love it. I was interested to find out what happened next in the story, but I wasn’t rooting for the characters. It wasn’t my favorite read.

I sincerely enjoyed this book and am still turning it over in my hands. It deals with very grand - and depressing - themes without ever giving the gambit away.

It’s almost impossible to review because it does such a good job at pretending to be a simple story about two licensed killers during the Californian Gold Rush when actually it’s about greed, tragedy, death and what motivates us as humans.

Also, the horse plotlines were devastating. Still not over Tub!

This was like if the twins from Bullet Train were crossed with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and then dropped into the Old West. But with none of the charm of either of those properties. It wasn't great and I don't know why I finished it.

I know I'm in a really small minority here but I couldn't even finish this book I found it so awful.

The gorgeous cover art and clever title is what brought the book to my attention and a story about hard drinking, killing brothers in a rework of classic westerns was too interesting not to give it a try.

It was the writing style that first put me off, I found it childish and the extreme stylization was off-putting. The emphasis on the character and not the adventure made it obvious that the book wasn't for me and I gave up reading about a third of the way through the book.

So I was very pleased with this book. It is not in my usual genre that I read but I think that's part of what I liked about it. It starts with Charlie and Eli receiving their new assignment. Part of what I liked was Charlie's roughness in contrast to Eli's sensitivity. Throughout most of the book I disliked Charlie I felt he was cruel to others and especially Eli. I liked that even though their profession was being hired killers, Eli still was so poignant at times. I liked the way in the end that the brothers decided to help Warm and Morris. I know they ended up losing everything because of it, but it really endeared both brothers to me. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because in the end I wanted Eli to get everything he wanted and that didn't happen.
