This graphic guide is informative, insightful and illuminating. It's a fantastic and accessible introduction to the topic of gender for people of all ages. However, even those that are informed on gender, are likely to come away having learned something new. It succinctly explores the definitions and evolutions of gender and sex, dissecting masculinity, feminity, cis, non-binary, gender fluid and trans identities. It explores understandings of gender throughout history and what they are in modern Western society today, and how these understandings fit in the wider context of patriarchy, capitalism, race, disability and sexuality. Since gender is such a complex and broad subject, it isn't by any means a exhaustive overview of gender. However, it adequately condenses as much information as possible into a couple hundred pages and is a great starting point for anybody that wants to educate themselves on gender. Although this could be a valuable read for all ages (I certainly came away having learned a lot!), I think it'd be particularly valuable for younger audiences as it presents complex information in a very accessible way through graphics and short bursts of text.

I'm hesitant to assign a rating to his because I didn't necessarily think it was bad so much as I felt it was incomplete, even for an introductory work on the topic of gender. It felt like a lot of things were briefly touched upon with no real follow-up or explanation, and while I appreciate that the purpose of this book is to act as a primer rather than an all-encompassing guide to something as nuanced and complex as gender, I still found myself wanting a bit more from it. If you're newer to and less knowledgeable about the subject matter, you might feel differently.

Less importantly, but perhaps still worth noting, I was a bit disappointed by the graphics. The artwork is charming, but there's no color, and I went into it assuming a book labeled as "a graphic guide" would be a little more heavy-handed in its use of artwork.

3.5 stars—I’m not sure why I didn’t like this book as much as the queer one but I just felt it was drier and not as engaging.

One of those books that I would recommend to everyone. Everything I could have hoped for.

Hesitant to rate this because I learned all of this in college and through experience so I don't know how well it truly functions as an introduction
