In architecture, biophilia is often watered down to a decorative application. This book looks at design, practices and policies that can bring back balance with nature and the mental health benefits. Exploring studies done in places like Korea and Finland, where time outdoors is prescribed for mental health rather than using a quick pharmafix.

Do you enjoy being out in nature?

I love spending time in nature. I find that it definitely makes me feel so much better if I’m feeling a little blah.

Honestly this was a book I mostly skimmed. I think a lot of it was just a bit to technical for me and it went over my head.

However, I do believe in the tag line on the front ‘nature makes us happier, healthier, and more creative’.

I feel all of those things after spending time in nature. I lost the sometimes obsessive desire to be on my phone or computer. I feel centred, recharged and calm. I crave reading, baking, writing, or other creative activities. If I spend time near water all of these senses and desires are heightened.

How does nature affect you? What type of nature affects you the most?

Overall a great, informative read. Droned on for a bit at points but I enjoyed the statistics and personal anecdotes.
Could the book have been condensed a bit? Sure. There were some points where I felt like the same thing was being repeated, just in a different way.
At the end of the day, the takeaway is as one would expect: Spending time in nature is crucial for our wellbeing and health. Spend as much time out in it as you can.
If you're looking for a convincing compilation of evidence to support the notion of the power of nature, you will find this book is exactly that, plus a little more.
8/10 recommended.

Admittedly, I’m the choir that this book is preaching to, but I learned so much and am more convinced than ever that getting out in nature is an essential antidote to the sicknesses of modern life.

Hit the spot!

I think this book hit the spot with overall information about this topic! Even if I gave it four stars...it just feels like something amiss. The author gave a trove of information from all directions. That’s amazing because not many authors do that nowadays. It is nice to see there were various fields to discuss - smell, vision, health, consciousness, education, psychological diagnosis, and more. It hit me when I had extreme fatigue lately and I read this book. I told myself that it was a while since I went on a short hike for a day. When I did, then I felt better for a week...it is telling.
