Though short, this book was heavy. It was written in 2003 by abolitionist/advocate Angela Davis; it could not be more relevant today than it was nearly two decades ago. Though rooted in ideology, Davis’ ideas are practical and well-researched. It was great to learn from one of the most brilliant minds who has been one of the most consistent leaders in changing the way we think about prisons, capitalism, politics, and humanity.

Angela Davis’s writing often challenges me, in a way that is very necessary and that I’m grateful for.

prison abolition is definitelyyyy a tough subject and one i was initially wary of but this definitely helped me at least begin to understand what its all about. my only concern is that davis doesn’t really address the question of how and/or what happens after abolition nor gives much detail of how these circumstances will work for victims, which was slightly frustrating. still, this was a very informative and pretty easy read!

I agree with the points made in this but I still have trepidation about allowing violent repeat offenders who would not feel remorse for the actions they took to only be held accountable through reparations. You can’t really have done reparations if you don’t feel remorse. That’s literally my only point of diversion.
