Though some stories seemed to echo ones collected in the previous volumes, overall, I'd say it is the best Sherlock Holmes book I've read so far (I'm yet to finish the 'series' though). Sherlock is portrayed not just as a capable detective and scientist but, more importantly, as a person who puts morality above the law.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes is, of course, a return of Sherlock Holmes after the supposed death of Holmes. This collection of short stories follows the format of the other collections. Through deduction, Sherlock solves many intriguing crimes.

SPOILERS Ahead. Consider yourself warned!!
This is the book where Holmes return from the dead after he fell from the Reinchenbach Falls with his archenemy Professor Mortiary at the end of [b:The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes|194373|The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes, #4)|Arthur Conan Doyle|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1374680963s/194373.jpg|6328892]. In the first story, The Adventure of the Empty House we learn that Holmes miraculously survived the fall and kept his death a secret for the last few months as Moriarty's gang was still at large.
The edition at my school library had a foreword which told the story behind Holmes resurrection. My best friend and I read with great interest that Doyle had killed Holmes as he had grown tired of him. Doyle wanted to be recognized for his other work beside Sherlock Holmes. However, Holmes had become such a beloved character at that time that there was an intense public backlash, especially from the readers of The Strand Magazine. One woman fan even wrote a letter to Doyle starting with these words, "You brute...". Eventually Doyle was forced to revive his most famous fictional detective and thankfully wrote four more books about Holmes.
