!!!This review is for the whole series!!!!

Is it toxic? Yes. Do I love it? Also yes. Ten Count is one of those series I've read 10 years ago and I remember just the very basic plot but I know I love it. Collecting the books was a challenge (vol 4 and vol 6 weren't available anywhere for a long time) and it took me more than a year to finally make myself read it. And Oh boy, I wasn't ready for it.

Maybe my 14-year-old brain couldn't grasp the toxicity of this series and loved it so much. But now I understand it. How sick and manipulative it is, the amount of very questionable sex scenes (go on, convince me most of them weren't rape). Yet I still love the story, the whole idea behind the initial shock of those scenes. I felt very sad for both boys at their backstories and I'm glad they found a way to each other. We don't always need someone to save us. Sometimes we just need someone to destroy us even more and embrace the mess.

This story has such a quietness to it that makes it hard to put down. I still question whether the dynamics are ones I can truly support - it’s fiction, yes, but as a person with a psych degree, it’s a little outside my comfort zone. We have Shirotani with a severe phobia of germs and a doctor that quickly blended a form of treatment with personal feelings. Kurose is aware that Shirotani is dependent on him and encouraged it. It’s a codependency that, from a story standpoint is interesting, but from a practical standpoint is worrying.

If I turn my brain off, the dynamics are engaging, but it’s hard to turn my brain off.

The artwork is lovely, the story is well paced and an interesting concept.

Wowzers, hadn't realized I'd finished volume 2 already (lol)

So I've lost track of time again. I think we haven't gone into 3 months yet but things are started to get steamy. I'm conflicted. I feel like the whole mysophobia thing is progressing still at a believable pace but also, is it? I mean, Shirotani still feels like he's dirty if people touch him (even with Kurose at times) but also he's getting used to Kurose and letting him tear down his defenses...

I like how we haven't gotten the full backstory of these characters but we can start seeing them sprinkled in when they do certain actions or feel a certain way (and it makes the story feel a bit more ominous). I'd say I can't wait but I'm kind of liking this whole innocent stuff happening right now. It gets complicated later on (LOL)

And ok Shirotani in Kurose's clothes IS MY THING (god he looks way cuter than usual and with his hair down, moe levels off the charts!!!)

I will admit that this volume was a bit underwhelming after my enjoyment of the first one.

Firstly, Shirotani's mental health is definitely not good here. Kurose is pushing him too far too fast, for sure, especially when it comes to the sexual stuff. And there's quite a bit of that in this volume, as well, now that Kurose has dropped the pretense of strictly being his counselor.

On one hand, this is definitely not healthy. It's not good for Shirotani, and he's clearly going forward with a lot simply because of his attraction to Kurose. The way that Kurose is pursuing this, as well, is bad. The reality of these things is overall not at all good. On the other hand, this being a yaoi smutty romance, and even their romance looked at in a somewhat bdsm style, it's kind of okay? In a guilty pleasure, not realistic kind of way. On that side, I'm enjoying it.

I'm a little iffy on the contents, but I am enjoying this series. I will be giving it a few more volumes, and I hope that it gets better and not worse.
