I love many of Preston & Child, but I have found that the Constance books are I am not found of at all. But I still read the whole book, which days a lot about how readable Preston & Child.

It is a curious thing - most curious, in fact, to have a character that is so well-loved, so, in fact, dear reader, so well-regarded (a "Marty Stu", if you will forgive the colloquialism), that so often plunges himself into dire peril. Even more curious is that this thin volume of the Pendergast series felt more like a light sketch than some of the richer entries into the series. I'd hoped that the small town and odd murders was going to be a welcome companion to Still Life With Crows (possibly my all-time favorite), but instead it appears to be a setup for another book (or books?) that will place the famous FBI Agent into even MORE peril. At this rate, I'm sure Pendergast has his very own X-File.

Still, a mediocre Pendergast book is still better than some of the strongest entries of other thriller writers. I just felt that the characters were not as present as in some of the past books.

Can't say this was my favorite Pendergast book, but they are always a fun read.

Okay, I'm not sure I should be writing this review right now because I am still in shock! II was not too sure about this story line, but I love Pendergast and stuck with it. As the story progressed, I began to see the Pendergast I know and love. I'm still not sure why he would want to take a private job tracking down wine thieves even if it turned into a case that was right up his alley. I'm also not sure how much to say, I don't want to ruin the story for anyone. So I will say this much, there is a kiss that I didn't think would happen, a death that hopefully will be like a previous death, and a return that can't mean anything good. Mr. Preston and Mr. Child I do hope you are already writing the follow on book to this one!

brb going to cry myself to sleep.

With tears of NOT BEING ABLE TO READ THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT NOW. And maybe joy. I don't know. What was that ending? What is life? What is the meaning of existence until the next book??!*

*This review was written entirely sober.

The continued development of Constance in this book was great. It was also nice to get back to the slightly supernatural plots. The ship-wrecked treasure and witch coven felt like two books in one.

ok

Parts were excellent, the beginning to middle, slowed down significantly. We get another baddie from the past. I can do without the police dog guards and their dogs dying every.time. I enjoyed Constance’s involvement in the mystery. I liked that the mystery was a monster this time!
