It's a very, very, very slow read.

There are a thousand PoVs in The Red Knight and I didn't care about half of them half as much as I should like, and I liked less than half of them half as well as they deserved. Mostly, I was confused.

It took The Red Knight book around 60% of its not insignificant length to draw me in, but once it did, it was so worth it. I held on in hopes of epic payoff, and it did deliver that, but unexpectedly, it made me fall in love with the characters as well. (Most of the recurring PoVs, at least.)

Recommended to patient fans of the genre who don't mind not knowing what's going on for quite a while. The battles, armour, the setting altogether was masterfully done. It can be read as a standalone, just actually stop reading when it feels like it should be ending, because from that point the remaining chapter or two are all buildup for the future. And do mind the TWs.

I nearly finished this in 2021, but it was just so meh it hung at 90 percent for several days.

The author knows his stuff about writing, armour and medieval history..

But this really didn't translate into an interesting story for me.

I cant even explain how fed up I got with descriptions of armour. It must cover at least a quarter of the book., so that's about 150 pages... no one needs that

The magic system is flawed. Some characters are insanely overpowered for the first book of a series. The magic ruins so many elements of the story, because it can completely revoke parts of the book.

Then there is roughly 25 pov.. thats too many. And so many of them, add no value. I dont need 4 povs for the same action sequence.

Shame to start a book with a 2 star. Worst still, I brought book 2 and 3 before I read book 1.
Sighhhhhh

I should have stopped after this:

“Desiderata rose and stood at the mirror – the longest mirror in the Demesne, made just for her, so that she could examine herself from the high arches of her feet, up her long legs, past her hips and thighs and the deep recess of her navel to her breasts, her upright shoulders, her long and tapered neck, deep cut chin, a mouth made for kissing, long nose and wide grey eyes with lashes so long that sometimes she could lick them.”

Excellent. There were a lot of typos in my copy, but overall the plot held up so well it worked out. Things that got to me is that names would change. A small character named Gruntag for his first few mentions becomes Grundag a paragraph later and stays that way forever. This bugged me and I was forced to remove a star for things like that and the misuse of "its" and "it's." Overall excellent and I'll read the second for sure.

This was just ok.

If you like really detailed battle scenes then this is the book for you! The battles go on for 10's of pages which is interesting the first few times but after 700 pages of book it gets old really quickly. I would have appreciated a map or a diagram of the castle, it was really hard to visualise what was going on

I had to do so much work just to understand the plot! The ways its written holds you at arms length (despite the fact that you're in someone's head) which means that I have no sense of what any of the characters are like or even what they look like.

The female characters are portrayed terribley, they're al basically someone to be raped (though the captain stops this happening through sheer force of will
