OUR MISSING HEARTS by Celeste Ng was absolutely enthralling. She weaves words together in a dreamy, hazy way that sucks you in and makes you listen.

The story takes place in a near-future (or maybe parallel) dystopian America, with enough pieces taken from reality that it’s downright eerie to read. I kept wondering where we were going with all of it… and then we got there, the peak of the story, the big action taken, and I thought it was stunning. I gasped, I cried, I was fully consumed by that moment.

I’ve read in reviews how others didn’t like the ending… but readers, in my opinion, it was perfect.

Five bright and shining stars, this book will live rent free in my head for a long time.

I didn't love it as much as Ng's previous novels, but it's still a worthwile book. It hit too close to home sometimes and it gave me chills.

4★: GOOD DYSTOPIAN WRITING SHOULD SCARE, AND THIS BOOK DOES IF YOU'RE UP-TO-DATE ON CULTURE WARS IN AMERICA. The publication of this book coincided with the increase in anti-Asian sentiment due to various politicians calling the COVID-19 virus the "China virus." So reading it this year made the book's climate very realistic. I also liked the role of books and censorship which is also timely. I could feel the fear in some of the characters. I hope this book gets made into a movie, and I will definitely read this author again. A dystopian story about a boy named Bird who lives with his father, and subsequently discovers what happened to his mother who had to leave the family.  Society has gone through some sort of crisis (apparently financial, never really fully explained) and blame was put primarily on those of Asian descent.  The government becomes more authoritative and has a policy of removing children from homes that they deem unfit. 

This was written well and I did like it, although maybe not as much as some other dystopian novels I have read. It was a bit slow and some of it felt a bit cold to me, although I suppose the society being described was in itself a bit cold.  I didn’t really feel all too invested in any of the characters, however overall I would recommend it to anyone who typically enjoys dystopian fiction.

I struggled with getting into this. I don't think it's bad and I'm normally a fan of slow books, but it just didn't work for me.
