The Fantasy aspects of this book are pretty remarkable, followed by the political intrigue that is also much improved over its predecessor.

The author is trying to write interesting female characters, and I would be impressed by it if these books were from the 70's or 80's. For being written in the last decade, however, it still feels very rough for long sections.

another 2 books combined into one I think? anyway the first book was good. not sure I completly love how it handles the female characters. they are often introduced as being smart and capable, but are then promptly useless when they need to be a damsel for plot, then they are made awesome again as the story grows. girls are always having weak emotional stuff and quietly crying while guys, instead, get to have weak moments where they doubt their purpose in manly fashion. but, after reading book part 1 of 2 i am definitely enjoying myself.

I launched into this book without pause after coming to the end of books 1-2 in the series. The reader, Tim Gerard Reynolds, is super at voicing all characters, male and female, but the best part of these books is that they tell a compelling story with interesting characters in an interesting world with an interesting history. These books are much darker than the first two, but that is to be expected because they are the middle of a long, through-written story. I am already embarked on the concluding books, 5-6, and finding no drop off in quality thus far.

Sullivan has one author's tic -- he likes suprise endings, and I am getting familiar enough with him now that I am often seeing the "surprise" coming. But not always.

I love Royce and Hadrian, both together and apart. Godly bromance. Fantastic adventure. I'm going to be so sad when this series is over
