I am so glad that I decided to start checking books off of my TBR because otherwise I would have missed out on this.

Phoenix and James' story is an emotional ride, but had me laughing, holding my chest, and close to crying at times. James' family adds so much to this storyline. I was invested in these characters right at the beginning when James' father is the first to arrive on the scene of a "break in".

While this book is mostly character-drive, there are some events that will have your heart racing AND a few steamy scenes that, honestly, let you see a different side to James and Phoenix.

This book does discuss depression and suicide along with some other serious topics, so please check the TW before reading.

If you want a sweet fluffy romance with the next door neighbor trope and healthy discussions of the reality of depression - Bring Me Back is for you! I am hesitant when mental health is a main focus of a book because I find it is difficult to represent it well. Kristen Granata is one author who can show the two sides depression has with such dignity and grace. The emotions portrayed by these characters are unmatched. Being able to see things from the side of someone who doesn't understand depression was very eye opening to me and honestly showed me some ways I can handle people like that in my own life. Fantastic read, low spice, it was truly amazing.

I was so close to rating this book 4.5⭐️ The romance (cooking aside) was impeccable and all of the main characters were written as genuinely good people.
Speaking of, Leo was a GEM 🖤 We love a toxic teddy bear that I strongly believe I could fix if he was real.

I just.... For context, I'm staunchly ACAB, but I usually don't have an issue tolerating cop romances. I decided to give this book a chance expecting that it would be a cop ROMANCE, but what I got was a COP romance. I hope that makes sense.

Unfortunately, the major catalyst in this "romance" was a cop killing a teenager. I still cant make it make sense. There is no logic that I can reach for that helps me understand why that was necessary or appropriate, really.
I also can't uncouple that from the weird and seemingly pandering CoHo line. There are all kinds of icky connections you could make there, none of which I want anything to do with.

I think the author's note was enough to tell me everything I needed to know. Instead of a trigger warnings page we get a "hey I know what you're going through and if you're experiencing suicidal thoughts read my book" um what? No. That was enough for me .
