A lovely little fable from Fitz’s world, showing how the magic of the Wit enters the Farseer dynasty.

A re-read. And just after having re-read the whole series. This one was darker than I remembered. And given what happened to the Witted in the series, even harder to take. This tale was basically the origin point of the Witted being treated like anathema. Sure a great little story. But distasteful. 3.5 of 5.

I haven't read any books directly related to this one in years. And this is just a little story set in this world. But it didn't require that you know or remember anything. It was just kind of a small well written train-wreck of a tale. Sad but kind of beautiful.

This was a good short, yet tragic book, twllimg a story of a maid and her time and her service to the Queen-In-Waiting Princess Caution, who's will and actions lead to a tragic end. Yet I hated how the maid's mother used and abused her in her bid to put her grandson on the throne. Yet I loved how her scheme was completely thwarted but I did feel sorry for how it effected the maid.
The next part was mainly about how she raised both her and Princess Caution's son, Prince Charger. This was then when the story focused upon them and their story was filled with such injustice that it made my blood boil. Yet at the twist at the end just so satisfying to read. When you come to it you will know why.

It's more satisfying than the Soldier Son trilogy, and it's a nice compact little Robin Hobb tale.

7/10 Stars. The brief story of the Piebald Prince and how the Witted/Old Blood came to be hated and feared so much in the Six Duchies. Interesting background information for the Robin Hobb books. If you enjoyed reading about FitzChivalry and Nighteyes, you'll enjoy this too.
