I’ve never hated a main character more than I hated Rhee.

This book was so mid.

I like the concept and the title which is why I picked it up off the shelf, but when I started reading, it was so slow to start with the exposition, and the end of it was okay. But I thought that Rhee would be cooler and wanting to avenge her family but she was so chill when she got to the palace.

So I won this in a giveaway, and it arrived in the mail yesterday. I enjoyed it a lot. It had a few cusswords, but that was about it for content wise. The story was more about the character's journey and thoughts, than trying to be a full blown action novel. So the book was setting up a lot of the key things I hope and think that will be answered in the second novel.

One of the things that I thought was a bit interesting, is that on the back cover ["Rhee and Aly are thrown together.."] makes it sound like Rhee and Aly will meet up with each other, but the fact is, they didn't actually meet. (yes, there were 2 instances where they almost did, but they didn't talk or meet up) So the whole time I was expecting these two characters to meet each other, but they never did. (It did make up for it by giving you both of their POV's throughout the story, so that was cool.)
Also, I was super excited by how I found out something in the book, before it was actually confirmed -it's so fun doing that. You feel so awesome lol XP-

This was a fun read, and if you like futuristic/sci-fi type reads, then this would also be a plus

The beginning of this book is the absolute worst because I couldn't force myself to give a shit about Julian and Rhee at all. I was about ready to give up on this when Aly was introduced. His chapters are so much more interesting than Rhee's; for some reason I really couldn't connect with her.

Rhee is definitely not one of my favourite characters and this sort of reads like a knockoff version of The Lunar Chronicles. Nevertheless, the interesting world building and action-packed storyline did manage to garner this debut novel a decent rating.

Easy read, mildly predictable at times. The characters and the setting were fun though.

It just wasn't captivating me. It was better than I thought it would be for an older YA book, but just not my style anymore

I felt like this would make a good Summer sci-fi/thriller blockbuster movie, but like those movies, I did miss some of those small opportunities to breath between the action that could've helped me connect to the characters a little more.

An interesting concept but far too much bouncing around in the stories to be truly enjoyable or well executed. I imagine it would have read better if the exposition was more thorough. An okay read, but I've certainly read better YA sci-fi.

This was a good book, and some parts were quite interesting. I just would have liked a little more detail for the worldbuilding. Also, at times certain plot points seemed too convenient. Still, there are hints that the next book will be really good so I look forward to reading it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought for sure it would be very predictable, and at times it was, but it doesn't follow the same old standard tropes. For one, the two main characters and their POVs only cross once and they never really meet. I cannot wait to see where the story is going from here after the ending.
