I would give this two stars but I generally only do that if I felt negative emotions towards a book.
Whilst reading this, I didn't really feel anything, so I guess I shouldn't be too harsh.
It was pretty cliché and the "big plot twist" could aleady be guessed around the middle of the book, even though it was only reveiled on the very last page...

Interesting concept, nice writing style, but fell quite flat for me. It was very predictable, there was no moment that made me shocked or I thought to myself, "I did not see that coming." Overall, not my cup of tea.

It took a little while to get going but once it did, it was interesting.

I didn't like the characters, the writing, and the story all together...
I couldn't make myself to like it, I really tried but...

Mid-book, it became clear that this was only a series intro. There was minimal resolution at the end, except for one reveal that was screamingly hinted at throughout.

Predictable and boring.

Before diving into Empress of a Thousand Skies I definitely had some expectations for it. I mean, the cover was beautiful and the synopsis sounded amazing. Yet diving into the book, well.. it was a very underwhelming and completely predictable.

It's a dual POV betwen Aly and Rhee. Aly, who is a guy even though my brain kept thinking girl, is on a ship with his best friend Vin. I loved their bantering friendship and definitely thought Vin was the comedic relief I needed so much. Well, until the rug was swept from under their feet and shit started to get real. Before I dive into that, well Rhee is a lonely orphan princess who is hiding on a planet because someone murdered her family.

Low and behold, her sister is actually alive and the love interest for Aly. After the first part of this book, things started to get pretty predictable. However, it did give some tiny good twists or at least different versions of a character. I was still very much bored while reading this book but I'm happy that it's finally over.

In the end, I kind of liked Rhee but I also didn't at the same time? I'm glad that she knows how to protect herself but she went from not wanting to be the princess or take over the thrown because of what happened to her family.. to finding out her sister is actually alive and wanting to take the thrown. I get that there's some stupid ass war brewing.. but she could've actually tried to look for her sister beforehand.

Then the romance between Aly and Kara and it just felt rushed to me. I didn't really care for it. Actually, I think a lot of stuff was rushing in this book and I have no idea if I want to dive into the second one.

Overall, it was a meh book that had potential to be a hell of a lot better than it was.

I didn’t love this book, but I didn’t dislike it either. It was just a pretty standard intergalactic sci-fi book. It’s very star-wars-esque world with many different planets and species. I will say I appreciated the ways this book touches on issues of racism, war, memory and personal rights. But honestly I don’t really love or connect with any of the characters (except Aly’s droid lol) and don’t really find any of them compelling but kind of like the authors attempt to make them complex has actually made them pretty one dimensional. I am curious about what will happen next, but I’m definitely reading it for a relatively action-filled plot that’s pretty interesting than the individual character stories and arcs. Maybe I’ll feel differently about the second book.

I wanted to love this book, I really did. On paper it was everything I love. But when it actually came to the story, I just couldn't connect with it. Or the characters- like nothing. One girl is raised to rule, but she's more obsessed with revenge. Like girl, you are pissed, but I'm sure in your 10 years preparing to be empress you would have had lesson in foreign affairs and governing 101. Not just how to fight.

I feel like it was too short, lots of details were missed/never addressed. Example: in the end of a chapter a character and best friend hurtling towards planet in this space pod. From the description it seemed like an empty planet awaited them. Nope, next time we see the character he is hiding on a space ferry in a closet or something. Then, like, a half page is dedicated to what happened: they crashed his friend died, buried him and walked into a nearby town- wtf? First like nothing for the dead friend, no scene of sadness or guilt in the moment. Just the guy remembering a week later. And how he got off this super awful gravity sucking planet- oh there are towns there, it's cool. No explanation! What?

It was full of holes like that, another being the female character and creepy guy she's traveling with (again the explanation was like huh?) have a space ship. Then they don't and have to fly on a space ferry. Then they have the ship again-wtf. Continuity is key, and not just for fun.

The whole book felt like that it was beyond frustrating. A cool premise but the book feels like the skeleton for a larger, and richer story it could (and should) have been.

Overall super disappointing. It had moments were it got better, but then yea, just fell flat for me.
