I feel the need to preface this review by admitting that I do not particularly care for 30 Rock and that I was starting to dislike Fey a couple of years ago when it seemed like everyone in the media was declaring her the funniest person EVER and constantly shoving her down my throat (Entertainment Weekly, I'm looking at you). Despite these feelings, I have always found Fey to be amusing and talented, and thought that this would be a fun read. Boy, was it ever! Fey's writing covers a massive range of topics, from her humble beginnings all the way to her current status juggling a personal and professional life. I particularly enjoyed the peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry, and the chapter devoted to the perfect storm of Oprah Winfrey's guest appearance on 30 Rock, her multiple appearances impersonating Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live and her daughter's birthday party was a real standout and a great example of how insanely busy and surreal her life is. After reading this book, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Fey and appreciate the fact that her work has opened doors for other female comediennes.

BLUF: Bossypants is a light, amusing read, but I would have been disappointed if I had bought the book instead of borrowed it.

Bossypants is essentially the ramblings of Tina Fey. This is mostly a benefit as the book reads like you’re in a conversation with her. There are instances where I think she purposely made the writing seem awkward or went on a tangent with the humor, but it’s exactly what you would expect from the author. (That said, the thing I found most interesting about the book was realizing that Donald Glover worked on 30 Rock.)

There is a downfall if you choose to buy/rent this electronically. All of the asterisks throughout the book correlate with a long list of “footnotes” at the end of the e-book. Even knowing this from the beginning, taking the time to read the correlating asterisk isn’t worth it. I guess this doesn't really matter, but they seem amusing.

Message: 2 stars
Prose/Language: 4 stars

I like memoirs to have a message; a reason why I should read about this specific person's life. Is there a common theme throughout their life worth imparting to others? A lesson only they could learn that everyone should know. What is that special something this person knows that should be shared with the world?

Bossypants is enjoyable and funny, but the message is a little all over the place. There are some good management points and some observations on women in the working world, but those points could have been a magazine article rather than a full book. To pad out the content, life stories were added and I couldn't tell why some of stories were added as they didn't contribute much (did the christmas trips really need to be mentioned?). Overall, it was entertaining but I'm now dissuaded from reading other hollywood memoirs because if this is one of the better ones then they're not for me.

There were some funny parts to this but all in all, it was boring.

I bought this book two days before a trip to have something easy to read on the plane. I couldn't put it down and finished it before I even got to the airport. Fun, witty, and is guaranteed to make you laugh audibly enough to get looks from the stranger sitting next to you.

Was it disjointed and a bit random? Yes. Did I laugh so hard at times that I had a mild asthma attack? Yes, yes I did.

Funny, but my favorite section was her views on breastfeeding...short but true!
