Okay… I read this book on a recommendation from a coworker. I don’t know how to begin telling her it’s one of the most basic books I’ve ever read and I definitely will not be reading the next books. It was lacking so much depth and creativity I do not understand how people can honestly enjoy this. It’s not that I mind young adult books but this felt almost worse than that. I like the whole female assassin bit however the execution was not there at all. I probably should have DNF’d this if I’m honest but I read all of it begrudgingly.

3.5. The wider fantasy bit of this - Elena and the ridderaks and the Wyrdmarks - I didn't really vibe with tbqh. Not that they didn't work, just that I.... didn't want them. There was already enough going on, by a lot. But the assassin/mercenaries/soldiers/thieves free-for-all was hella fun. I'm not super in to love tripods but this one was done well enough that I didn't find it too obnoxious, though I fell in love with Nehemia and Celaena's friendship more than any other relationship here. It left a lot to be desired when it came to Chaol and Dorian's "friendship," which was told to me rather than shown to me through the entirety of the book since they were barely ever together the way, say, friends might be.
