Compelling enough to stick with but far from Scottoline's best. Bennie and Declan?? 13 years later?? Implausible.

This one was not my favorite so far. I want to get to know Bennie, but she makes it hard. The case was so frustrating, the characters were mostly likable.

There are two stories in one here. There is the back story of 2 middle school boys, a bully and his prey. Their disaster is unconscionable, I don’t want to give anything away... but we do find out that nonsense!

The book starts with a murder. The prey has been accused of killing the bully 10 years later. The bully’s family is something else.

There is a side story of Bennie and a love twist that complicated things.

Again, I do like this series and will keep reading, and I think I just have to get used to first meeting and getting acquainted with the firm’s characters.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast paced read and it kept me guessing right to the very end. I definitely recommend Slaughter to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

The book wasn’t boring by a long shot but it also wasn’t that exciting. The entire first part of the l book was spent on explaining what happened 12 years prior when I was under the impression that I’d be reading about a murder trial with high stakes because Bennie wanted redemption for a previous loss. I was looking forward to more court room scenes and lawyering and instead I got child abuse, anger management issues and a romance I couldn’t care less about. Bennie and Declan’s entire relationship was cringeworthy and developed TOO quickly. Even the breakup was a snooze fest. I actually wanted to stop reading toward the end of part one but I was too far along to go out like a bitch. Things started picking up on part three, when the trial actually started. I did enjoy the courtroom scenes; it’s just the stuff outside of the courtroom that wasn’t quite my favorite. The end felt very rushed and was lazily written. Everything ended TOO perfectly. Overall, the book way okay. Not great, not bad.

I usually like the Rosoto law firm stories but this one was off for me. Too much boring procedure in the first case and too much soap opera in both. None of the characters really resonated - very two dimensional.

Founder of the Rosato & DiNunzio law firm, Bennie Rosato, takes on the case of Jason Leflavick, accused of murdering Richie Grusini. Thirteen years previously, Jason, at the age of twelve, was sent to a juvenile detention center after fighting a class bully, the very same Richie. Bennie pulled out all of the stops, but was was unable to free Jason and has never forgiven herself. When she hears of Jason's indictment for killing Richie, she is determined not to let him down a second time. Bennie is going to work really hard for Jason because she cannot let him down again.

Bennie has always displayed a tough-as-nails exterior, especially around her co-workers, but for several chapters in this book, Jason's childhood case is recalled. These recollections are hard on Bennie as she has many dark memories of that time while trying to help young Jason. We get to see Bennie's softer, more maternal, side. Bennie fell in love with a cop, Declan, Richard Grusini's uncle, and subsequently suffered a broken heart. Now that Declan's nephew is dead, Bennie cannot help but to cross paths with him again. No doubt he stands against her defending Jason, but what is more, wants something else from Bennie.

Corrupted was a fast-paced read, marrying the past and present cases that tell us a lot about Bennie's nature and why she has always been so gruff. She suffered undeniable hurt in her life at the hands of the man who said he loved her. But her focus is now, and she seeks to redeem herself with Jason's case, and this shows just how strong a character she is. This is a thrilling, yet sensitive story, not necessarily a hard-hitting legal drama. Yet, it is chock full of secrets, a broken heart, corruption and sensitivity.

I purchased this entire series and have read Accused and Betrayed, Mary's and Judy's stories, respectively. I have Feared for review for NetGalley and as a die-hard lover of series, will also be reading Damaged and Exposed. I have also purchased several other titles by this author.

Scottoline has had some hit or misses for me in the past. This one was a hit for sure. I really enjoyed how Scottoline chose to expand on Jason's past and then later bring it back into play. Bennie...urgh, I hate that name, but I loved her character. Bennie was smart, nice and actually cared about her client. I don't think she disliked Declan enough...I barely liked him in the beginning and then the crap he tried to pull? No way would I forgive him that easily.

As always, another great book from Scottoline! Third in a series - Bennie Rosato represents 12 year old Jason. Jason is accused of pushing a bully, and things go crazy from there and both boys wind up in Juvie with sentences far greater than their crimes.

Thirteen years later, Jason is on trial for murdering Richie! Jason hated Richie, but swears he'd never murder him. And Bennie is on the case.

Bennie and her team try to piece together what happened. Along the way, all business Bennie finds herself having some motherly feelings toward Jason!

The trial and Bennie herself keep you interested until the very end.

Thank you Netgalley & St. Martin's Press for my ARC copy. It was my pleasure to read it and give you my honest review!
