I could say SO much about this book, but I like to keep my reviews short. . .so yeah, enjoyed it but also hated it. Really hated some plot and character choices Martin made. When comparing the HBO show to the book I definitely liked the show WAY better. The way the book is written with 3rd party speculation was super annoying. It’s like Martin couldn’t decide how he wanted the plot to go so he wrote it this way so he could put forth all his plot ideas. In the end I love Westeros and dragons, but this book just fell short for me.

The premise of this being an unreliable historical narrative of this world is just so spot on and well executed *chef’s kiss*,,, is it too much to ask for a HotD season about Jaehaerys and Alysanne? Pls someone somewhere convince GRR to keep writing.

A seriously impressive book. So many names, twists, turns, family trees, lordships established or overthrown, and a whole lot more. I prefer the novel style of the ASOIAF series, but this was an unexpected joy to read. It made me sort of bristle at the fact that WoW hasn't arrived yet and made me want to read the series all over again. It was mostly a breeze, though the final conspiracy was a bit of a slog to get through but that could be just because it was right at the end and followed by a long discussion of appointments fir regencies (which for me was a bore). A pity we'll never see the sequel to this or A Dream of Spring.
