“Fleetwood, your head is full of fancies. You speak as if we are in a play, all with a part to act. You and I have no role in the king’s justice. We support our husbands.”

I think I need to stop reading historical fiction about female characters (and motherhood). They tend to make me pretty angry.

This is a good book, and one of the better ones dealing with these themes that I've read. Fleetwood tries to do what she can, despite the constraints that are placed on her by society. Her character felt very real to me.

This book is a beautiful work of fiction based on real people and events sourrounding the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. I’m not typically a fan of historical fiction, but the themes of friendship and womanhood drew me in and kept me needing to know how things would end up for both Fleetwood and Alice. I loved this book and can’t wait for future works by Stacey Halls.

It was very slow at the beginning and the name of the book is fairly deceiving. But i really enjoyed this story and had a hard time putting it down.
