I'm always dubious about sequels. No matter how much I loved book1, I'm always hesitant to read book2 becasue they always seem like a letdown. But Kingdom of Copper was just as good as City of Brass.
The plot is well-paced and the characters feel like they've developed from book 1. The setting is still magical yet horrifying, with everyone thinking up new and terible ways to physically and emotionally hurt each other. The relationship dynamics are very interesting - fathers and sons, soldiers and commanders, husbands and wives, followers and heroes. They're written in a realistic and nuanced way which means many of the characters we follow are a grey area of right and wrong and you're never really sure who to root for.
I loved the twists and turns of the plot, and it's a book full of magic and horror and heartbreak and family and adventure! The one issue I have is that, after two whole books, I still can't figure out the names of the tribes and how they relate to each other. but that doesn't stop me enjoying the books, and I just sort of let the names like ifrit and daeva wash over me while I enjoy this wonderful fantasy series.
A really excellent book and a worthy follow-up.

I liked The Kingdom of Copper way more than The City of Brass. Very intense politics; complicated and tense family relations, and the development these characters deserve. Let's see how it unravels in The Empire of Gold

Better than City of Brass

It starts a slowly, but when it picks you up it doesn't let go.
This book is mora political than the first, with the adventure part happening til the very end. But it is very very good

This is just so good. Everything is top notch: the characters, the writing, the plot, the world building.
You start the book thinking there is only one right side and finish it by being one the other side completely.
I need the third book asap.

It was slow for the first 1/3-1/2 of the book. But then I couldn’t put it down!
