Hmmmm. 3.5? There was a lot of potential, but this book was DEFINITELY written in the 2000s. There's some dated stuff, for sure—she mentions someone has an "Oriental" look to them, and there's a line about someone who has a "throaty voice only black men and vampires are allowed to have" which was awkward. I also didn't really like the way she kept reacting to Ivy, her vampire roommate. There were definitely some feelings there (for sure on Ivy's side) and Rachel kept being all "I feel drawn to her, NOT THAT I'M GAY I DON'T THINK, NOPE, DEFINITELY LIKE MEN" and I don't think this is gonna turn into a gay thing, so, it was weird. Also, it's wild that they just decided to completely outlaw bio-med because of one thing that went wrong. I mean, looking at it from a modern lens and the way people reacted (or didn't) to Covid, that would never happen lol.
But I liked the potential and I'm desperately looking for something to fill the Kate Daniels hole in my heart, so I will give the second book a try.

I didn’t know what was going on half the time and the build up feels like it was taking ages even with the quips and jokes

I love this book and the series in general. This series has a lot of character growth. Initially, in this first book, Rachel Morgan is a complete hot mess but lovable anyways. She's just trying to be a good person and do the right thing while doing what's right for her. I find that despite the far fetched world that she's still relatable. I like that the supporting cast is just as interesting and fleshed out personality wise with their own motives and world view. I feel that more than any other other writer that Kim Harrison has gotten her characters to have very distinct and different personalities while still making them lovable and/or interesting. That is quite difficult to do. This was a very strong first book for a series. On a side note, the Mink chapters are especially great.

When I first starting reading this book I had downloaded a free sample of it on my Nook. I was looking for a book to get my niece for Christmas and her and I tend to have the same taste in books. I was laughing so hard at the free sample my husband suggested that I might wait to read it at a time when he wasn’t trying to sleep. Probably a good idea, but I couldn’t put it down so I bit my tongue to keep from laughing out loud. Yes, the first part of the book is laugh out loud funny.
This book has three lead characters that start out the Book, but the lead character is Rachel Morgan a witch. She is a white witch and is a “runner” for the I.S. (I don’t remember what it stands for). She isn’t very successful at it, as a matter of fact she is pretty bad. She has a pixie named Jenks as a back up because no one else will back her up. It seems Rachel is a danger to others as well as herself. The other lead character you meet in the bar where Rachel goes to pick up her criminal. It is her former partner Ivy a non-practicing vampire, who is also there to pick up a criminal.
Fast forward to the three of them leaving their jobs with I.S. you are going to read those circumstances. They all leave together. And that is where our adventure begins. I have been torn with thinking Rachel is a total idiot to just thinking I don’t understand her. She is willy-nilly and plans nothing out and flies by the seat of her pants. Probably a good thing really. After all hers is not always a fun job.
I love these characters, each for their own attributes and failings. I love Rachel because although she is a witch, not to be confused with a human, and she is all too human. Ivy because she is trying really hard to not follow her instincts as a vampire. And Jenks because he is Jenks. He is irrepressible and is a lot of fun. And then there are the secondary characters, namely Jenks family. They are the security guards as you were, they are the only reason that Rachel isn’t taken out by fairies assassins. Hmm they must be related to Tinkerbell before they changed her.
Bottom line? I loved it, will read the next book in the series. I already downloaded it on my Nook. Should you read it? YES!!!
I wish that there was a four and a half stars!!

Rachel Morgan is a witch and a bounty hunter. When she decides to go into business for herself, her former employer puts a bounty on her head. At least she's got friends to help save her hide.
I'm not sold on this one. Rachel was really annoying. The worldbuilding was a little uneven. I know this was the first in a series, but I was still confused. And is that an enemies to lovers thing going? I do not approve. I think I'm done with this series.
