Surviving Skarr by Ruby Dixon

This one was hard for me to enjoy because I just can’t stand characters like Skarr, the big dumb jock who always talks about himself… I believe the point of his character was to be unlikeable and the author truly succeeded in that.

Vivi was a more likable character, that’s for sure, but I also don’t find her really relatable so she doesn’t stand out for me. I care for her and her story, but not as much as I have for other characters. The struggling with being a clone aspect was done better in R’jaal’s book, in my opinion. Since we had already dealt with that and there wasn’t any true danger or drama, this was a more low stakes story.

The most enjoyable part was the humor throughout the book and everything from about 75% onward. Skarr becomes a bit more likable and Vivi’s character blossoms more by then.

This one was so solid. WILD turnaround with Skarr as a character, but it works. It seems similar to what she was trying to do with Callie’s Catastrophe, but here we actually DO end up liking the dick hero. And Vivi is great: the ex-goth, survivalist, introverted, dominant clone we didn’t know we needed. Finding out from the author’s note that Dixon had based the two of them originally on Andy & Allison from The Breakfast Club made so much sense in some ways.

Surviving Skarr is more of "Watching Skarr Turn into a Cinnamon Roll"

Its cute and fun. The double trouble was interesting. I had a good time

I unfortunately learned more about lizard anatomy that I'd bargained for with this one!

Vivi and Skarr are both clones new to the world. This is a contained story, but the next book will give us more info on the ancestors

As you can guess from the series title, these newbies to Not Hoth are clones. The issue is, a lot of them are illegal clones that don't have the knowledge of being a clone. So they have some access to their "original" memories, but they get to deal with the existential crisis of discovering that those aren't actually things that they have done. They haven't done anything. But some of the clones, specifically the gladiators, do know they're clones. I love it here.

Skarr is a lizard splice, and as you can imagine this does not work well on a frozen planet. He is also an egomaniac, so he's not the most popular guy. And yet, he is the first gladiator to resonate.

Vivi really struggles with her clone-ness. A crisis of identity if you will. BUT. She was cloned from a woman with a survivalist father and a lot of really useful skills. She is also extremely shy and socially anxious. Which is the exact opposite of Skarr. He is not shy and he wants everyone to know he's the best. My favorite part of this was the way that they care for one another. They pick up the slack for each other and it's perfect. I can't wait to get to know Rem'eb!

I wasn't looking forward to this book because glimpses of Skarr in the previous one weren't great, but WOW! I loved this book so much.

Two people (a clone and an alien splice) discovering who they are- and who they can be- which falling for each other. This was a delight, and was everything we love in a Ruby book.

I am squealing for Skarr and Vivi and am so happy that I read this!
