I don’t think you need to enjoy video games to love this book. The characters were so beautifully written and the development of them was amazing.

I was utterly heartbroken about Marx dying and didn’t expect it happening until the moment the shooter scene was written. The way the characters grief was written too also had me crying.Graphic: Medical content, Grief, Injury/Injury detail, and Medical trauma
Moderate: Death, Death of parent, Suicide, and Car accident
Minor: Alcohol and Drug use

It starts off well with these two kids bonding over video games. His foot was destroyed in a car accident and she was visiting her sister with cancer, and they bond as two friends never have before. But then the “secret” of Sadie using their friendship for community service (or at least that’s how it started – she was a little opportunistic, but then she actually became best friends with Sam) comes out and he won’t talk to her for years because he’s hurt.Spoiler

Definitely check out the content warnings before reading this one because some of them came out of left field. I'm usually a horror/thriller reader, but there were a few scenes that were so jarringly dropped into this story that I got uncomfortable.

But overall the main characters didn’t pull me in.. I found Sadie to be miserable and kinda an asshole and Sam was very self loathing. The slow burn that led to nothing was also a let down. And probably a fault of mine not looking more into what this story was about, but I don’t think I’ve ever read something with so many harsh content warnings on it.

My only complaint was how little we got from Sadie during the last quarter of the book. But now that I write this maybe that was fully intentional. We would get Sam’s side of the story often when he was really going through it, so I was waiting for Sadie’s side to come and it never did. I could be wrong though and maybe her side wasn’t necessary.Graphic: Suicide, Hate crime, Medical trauma, Infidelity, Medical content, Racism, Blood, Death, Mass/school shootings, Murder, Physical abuse, Pregnancy, Sexual violence, Death of parent, Grief, Gun violence, Car accident, and Homophobia

There is mention of an animal injury (possibly unintentionally caused by a person). The animal survives, recovers, and thrives. Can easily skip over the paragraph that discusses the injury to get to the happier times.sharebear431's review against another edition

Ironically, this quote from page 251 is how I'd describe the whole book. Characters play games, and talk about games, and talk about making games, but we don't know anything about the characters. I didn' t believe these characters exist, I couldn't picture the characters or interactions. There's no description of what is said or done, every line is just "said". Sadie was stroppy at him for 2 years and no one mentioned anything? I honestly don't understand. For what is a long book with clearly so many words, how is nothing happening & I know nothing about the characters. Where did all these words go?
I feel really dissapointed by the advertising as it sold it heavily as a friendship and friend love story, but really the friendship isn't a choice, Sam has been "friend-zoned" and is moany and vindictive over it. Sam claims he loves Sadie but tells Marx she's his / she belongs to him around page 351-2 - despite this being the exact fear and detest of ownership and marriage that Sadie has. He doesn't respect or align with her values & feels ownership over her - how can he truly love her?
Sam honestly ruined this book for me. I enjoyed the writing & it made me slow down to read it, but i couldnt stand Sam from about 60% in. I couldn’t get behind him. Marx deserved better.
Read it if you're interested & want to, but if you're picking it up just from the hype, then I'm not sure. I read it all & I'm glad I read some bits but can't say I'm glad I read the whole book. I just want justice for Sadie & Marx.
