Important, thoughtful summary and analysis of the ways that imprisonment tactics have been spread to outside of prisons themselves in the US

required reading for abolitionists, community builders, and everyone. so many awesome case studies! introducing the concept of a “somewhere else” to continue to disappear folks from society has truly changed my world

For anyone who believes the prison industrial complex can be reformed, this tackles why reform is ineffective and presents an irrefutable case for abolition. From house arrest to foster care and how surveillance and criminalizing poverty are harmful, this covers an extensive amount. I’m glad this book exists.

Learned a lot and I loved that it was interspersed with real people and real stories.
- house arrest is worse
- they have ways to track whether someone is taking medicine??
- forcing people to go into addiction treatment doesn't work, but helping it be more appealing and voluntary does
- forcing people into mental hospitals is worse
- community policing doesn't work
- putting more resource officers in schools is worse
