Recently I started re-reading a lot of books that I DEVOURED in late middle school/ early high school, to see if they were “actually good” of if it was just all the teenage hormones. Westerfeld’s Uglies is actually good!

From a unique world that challenges, and makes the reader thing about social issues combined with a compelling narratives that engrossed the reader- Uglies is a masterpiece! Uglies tells a story while still pushing the reader to ponder for themselves what is right and wrong- not only in the dystopian society created by Westerfeld, but also in the society we live in. The reader gets to decided how they view “Prettyville”, “Uglyville”, and the “Smoke”- among other things.

I really enjoyed re-reading the book, not just for the nostalgia of it, but because it still is up-to-par with current books that I gravitate towards!

If you’re looking to re-visit your high school library or just want to read a good YA book that had a fresh take on social issues, I would highly recommend Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies.

I read this book expecting it to be total teen fluff; I was very pleasantly surprised to find an outstanding book that was difficult to put down.
This is another of the options for high school summer reading in Huntsville this year. I never ever would have thought about this as having any substance but I was oh so wrong.
The only thing I didn't like was the total cliff hanger of an ending - now I MUST read Pretties.

3.5 stars. I read this book for school. I found myself getting bored during some parts. For example, traveling back and forth to The Smoke. It was very tedious and nothing new ever happened. Other parts were very exciting. I liked the relationship between David and Shay. It was really cute. At the beginning it was hard getting used to being able to imagine the places they were at. For example, rusty ruins. Even after finishing the book I’m still having a hard time imagining the places. The author wasn’t very descriptive about them.

As I've already told some, I wasn't sold on this book as a whole until towards the end of Part II, when the ugly truth came out. The superficial pretties disgusted me, and I found Tally very unlikeable in the beginning. Only Shay was redeemable in the first cast of characters leading up the the Smoke. Then, as Tally found herself, I appreciated her more. These characters are complex with strong desires and motivations, some strictly taught and others pondered on for weeks or years. The world is a twisted dystopia that I suspect many of us would cling to in our teen years, which we think we know what we want. I started this book very hesitantly. Now, I'll need to read the rest of the series to discover the rest of Tally's and Shay's journeys. I do hope subsequent books reveal more depth of side characters such as Croy.
