Wow, loved the casual & ongoing racism lol. This could have been so so good, and yet...

Fiction-imitating-life tale of the trials and travails of applying to exclusive pre-school.

Writing this now in Feb 2019, I can't remember much about The Ivy Chronicals. I think I read it on the plane/on the beach one summer (?5ish years ago) - possibly around / shortly after reading the secret life of a slumy Mummy. I think I enjoyed it at the time, and liked the strong woma. But it hasn't stayed with me.

It was...okay.

I really wanted to like this book. I'm a sucker for books about private and/or boarding schools - actually, most schools - and, having done a fair amount of non-fiction reading on the subject, I wanted to see how a fiction author treated it.

Unfortunately, I had trouble sympathising with the main character. Yes, she has some tough breaks, but frankly, I've read enough books about wealthy characters falling on hard times that I was unimpressed. I'm glad I read this (though I doubt I'll be re-reading it), but between the flat characters and the predictable plot I was hardly wowed.

It's not going to win any awards, but it's a light easy read. Uf you liked Nanny Diaries, you'll like this. 2 Page chapters, just what you need for summer.

Typical chick lit: predictable. I enjoyed it though. Some parts made me laugh outloud.

The book follows the ups and downs in the life of Ivy Ames following her sacking from her high-flying New York job and the discovery of her husband's unfaithfulness. Ames sets up a consultancy helping Manhattan's rich and powerful get their beloved children into one of the top private kindergarten schools while juggling the lives and needs of her own 2 children, recently out of private school themselves, and a downsizing move to a less salubrious area of town.

This book is in the chick lit vein and certainly won't win any literature prizes. However it is an entertaining read, with enough romance, skull-duggery and interesting characters to keep the pages turning.

I think I'm just not cut out for these "rich bitch tell-all" sort of books (Nanny Diaries, anything by Candace Bushnell, etc.), because I just couldn't really like this. It was often so OBNOXIOUS and definitely predictable, and the main character was so unlikeable and there was something about the super-ultra-rich best friend that just felt off and over-the-top and silly. I plowed through it quickly just to be done with it. I can see other people loving it, though, so this is definitely just my personal feeling on it!
