Enjoyable and fun read. Packed with magic and fantastical creatures and characters.

Jacob discovers a mirrorworld in his father’s mirror, through which his father disappeared, and he must save his brother before he loses him to the mirrorworld as well.

The audiobook was very enjoyable, the narrator does a great job of giving each character their own voice and personality.

I read this book as a recommendation and it's been such a long time since I read anything by Cornelia Funke. I've read the Inkheart trilogy, Dragon Rider and The Thief Lord, all when I was 13 or around that age. So I was interested in finding more about this story that I had started to learn about before through my friend. After some of the things that I had read recently which were rather complex with the English language (eg. The Thorn Birds) the English in this book was very easy and simple to read. This created the effect in me that I was reading a fairytale or something in that genre, and actually, I really liked that - something I wasn't expecting! I've seen some people saying that the English in this book is clunky, maybe because of translation, but that just added to the reading experience fairytale-like feeling I had while reading. And I read this book in about 24 hours so clearly, I liked it. It didn't matter to me that, as some people mentioned, the chemistry is not always there between all the characters, or that they are not really introduced, because that, again, added to the fairytale-like feeling. And I have to say, I liked this book a lot. I liked the general plot and most of the characters (Fox is my favourite though) and, really, to read this after some of the more complex things I've been reading, this was really nice. I'm curious what happens in the next book (without giving away spoilers, maybe something about the price paid?) but I'm sure my friend will keep me informed :)

I don't really know how I feel about this book, it had both it's good points and it's bad points. I'll think I'll start with the bad points so I warp it up with something good.

I think the pacing of this book was too fast, WAY too fast. It was hard to keep up, especially since s couple of chapters would be in the viewpoint of Jacob on his friends, and then one chapter will go straight to someone different then back to Jacob. It confused me a lot but I think if the pacing slowed down then the alternating viewpoints wouldn't be as confusing. I'm still having trouble remembering what happened in some parts because it just went so fast.

However, I loved the fantasy and imagination behind this novel. The idea of a new, different world just behind a mirror sets up a lot of adventure and action, which I loved about this book. There were interesting characters and I absolutely adore the love between Will and Clara, even if it's hinted at a bit of a love triangle when an incident happens between Jacob and Clara.

I still liked this book and will still read a sequel if there is one planned, I just hope that Funke slows it down a bit because it was really fast paced.

I feel like I would have enjoyed this book much more when I was a kid. Reading it as an adult, it does get predictable. Similar to her other trilogy, Inkheart , it has another world filled with magic and adventure yet it didn't entice me as much as her other books. It made what would be exciting fight scenes... Meh.

The drawings of scenery were really pretty.

I felt very little emotionally for the characters in Reckless.   I gave it a three because Funke is a good writer, and the world building was enchanted.

2024-08-15 Finished chap 18 (p 124/394), but was not getting into the book. Too much fantasy and time travel for my liking.
