This is an important book, especially for these volatile times. I recommend We all read it at least once. I plan on starting again soon so I can take notes.

This book would Work Well in church groups, therapy groups, maybe even work teams.

She addresses the importance of standing up for yourself (Alone), but also talks of how we can still belong and get along despite our differences.

Felt very prescriptive, at some points ill-informed, and much different than I was expecting. I hoped “the courage to stand alone” would be guidance for self love, independence, and building boundaries— instead it felt much more kumbaya “let’s be kind to everyone all the time.” Of course, there’s value to that sentiment and I did appreciate some advice given. However, comparing apples to orange (especially on topics like racism, sexism, violence, etc) is just not it.

Everyone should read this. It calmed a lot of anger in me towards other, while also giving me more confidence in who I am and what I believe.

Brené Brown expresses her academic research tackling belonging in a palatable text with Braving the Wilderness. Through a combination of anecdotal and qualitative data, Brown vulnerably presents the tools for obtaining belonging and the importance of a functioning society to maintain these. I have recently been going through dark times, as a lot can relate having gone through the pandemic, and had looked to reading as an escape. Coincidentally, this book was next on my list which I found to be a timely motivation to progress while maintaining humanity, being generous, and doing so with transparency of others and myself. Braving the Wilderness allowed me to reflect and refocus. Would recommend to anyone.

Brené always gives me what I need at the time. This is what I needed to be reading right now, as several of my community circles are feeling difficult, some for the first time. Thanks to Maya Angelou as well. Two important, thoughtful ladies that I always learn from whenever they cross my path.
