I can't believe I'm gonna read the second one. This one wasn't even good. I didn't even really like it.

Compels me though.

Guilty Pleasures is the first book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. This is my first foray into the adult paranormal romance genre. In the beginning of the book, I found myself losing track of all the characters. Who is and isn't a vampire. All of a sudden, names would pop up and I wasn't sure where they came from. I kept having to reread sections to make sure I knew what was going on. This is a very short book, yet somehow, I often felt bored. At the same time, the story was elaborate and went too quickly. But once I got to the second half of the book, things really picked up. I found myself rooting for Anita, the kick-ass and witty heroine, and desperately wanting to know more about Jean-Claude. (Sexy, mysterious night club owner. Where have I seen this guy before? go team eric).

To be honest, I kind of expected some romance or maybe even *gasp!* sex in this book. I was left disappointed because I'm not even sure who was supposedly Anita's love interest (Isn't this supposed to be a romance?) I was a also a little confused about Phillip. Even though Anita is a very tough chick, she became smitten/drawn to this vampire junkie? Come on, I get the feeling if Anita was dead set against falling for his charms she would have resisted a bit harder. Even though it went no where, I felt that relationship made Anita seem a tad weak.

Luckily, Anita is such an intriguing character, I find myself wan't to find out what other trouble is going to land on her doorstep.

The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series has been all the rage. It is a good book and very interesting premise. This book was very good and it led me right to the book store to get number 2.

Did not like it at all, will not continue the series. The writing was bad imo, and the "love interest" wasn't even in the book!

Not at all what I was expecting. For one, the cover is a total mislead. The paperback I got from the library showed a slender woman's bare midsection with a wilting rose and its petals across her belly. For another, this book was recommended to me as an alternative to 50 Shades of Gray. Sure, an alternative; Dr. Seuss is an alternative, too. There wasn't one bit of sex in this whole book. Vampires and wererats, murderers and fetishist parties, and one make out scene, but no sex. Whatever. Aside from all the false advertising, it was a good mystery. The actions scenes were excellently described and the main character was a fun narrator.

Rating weighted for nostalgia/sentimental value. I'm re-reading this series for the first time in at least 15 years. It has not aged well. LKH writes people of all genders the way so many male authors write women. The religious slant gives me the ick now. But I love the premise and how LKH weaved it into the political landscape. I'll reserve any more judgement until I re-read later books, but I remember losing enthusiasm around book 10 due to the plot getting lost in all the sex scenes.
