the colonial undertones of this novel is what makes this novel so incredibly compelling. its THE novel of empire. it portrays british rule as something so benign and fits every character other than kim into these neat caricatures and stereotypes yet you can tell the portrayals are loving. i thought about this book way more than i expected i would!

Fun bildungsroman redolent with the scents of India. As Kim journeys across the country, he comes into contact with devout Tibetan Buddhists, befuddled Irish priests, Mohammedan horse dealers and Hindu spies, confronting colonialism and experiencing different faiths. A story about religion and the meaning of life couched in a travel memoir/adventure tale.

I love this book
What an adventure! It's a spy novel, a Bildungsroman, a portrait of old India (with typical attitudes of the time) and so much more.

Excellent. The book makes you fall in love with India (of the book). I liked the fact that by the end of the book, all of the men who came in contact with Kim were good friends: the Teshoo Lama, Mahbub Ali, Lurgan Sahib, and Hurree Chunder Mookherjee. Loved Kipling's description of dawns and dusks.
