This book has been a whirlwind of emotions for me. From fear to love to the panic attacks that Brianna has gone through I felt them all. I loved the fact I could connect with each character and saw the world through their eyes, that has put me into the 1st place of a movie developing in my imagination.

The world-building has been breathtaking, crazy, and scary all at once, such a big world ruled by even bigger animals – I really thought how it would be to see animals three times bigger than us, ordinary animals like a bird to be able to carry us in their claws – that thought alone is scary.

I loved the fact the book focuses also on mental illnesses such as PTSD that Brianna is going through, and I really loved the fact that slowly she was beating that and getting better. I know I mentioned this already but the fact we get real issues to the heroines of a book is such a different feeling for me – because sometimes even heroes have their hard days.

The character growth into this book has been tremendous, Brianna has grown under our eyes from day to day if at the beginning she would cower into a corner, this time she held that sword and went ahead to fight and confront her own fears and I so loved her for that.

This book as the previous one for me has been an amazing journey, loved the slow burn romance and the found friendships and the found family and finding her own voice and standing up for her, even in front of a king. The ending of the story was perfect and left me with a bigger desire to read the next one and find what other adventures we’re getting into because there is so much more to explore in the world of Birds and Beasts and I’m so in it.

Now, I can’t reveal too much without spoiling, but here’s what you need to know:

With only two guards to aid her, Lady Brianna is cast from the Borderlands and made to find her own way. As she travels to find the voice she’s been hearing in her mind, things between Prince Jian and the Spirit-Beasts grow much worse.

Holy heck, this book was one wild rollercoaster… and I loved every second of it!!! I loved how confident Brianna becomes; she really grows into her own in this novel and I was so proud of her for it. Her wit and fire is matched by few.

As for Jian, I feel like we get more insight into his character as well. He made a lot of mistakes, but overall I think he means well, and he definitely never means to hurt anyone. By the end of the novel, I adored him. Definitely new book boyfriend alert!!!

Another element I actually really liked was how we learned more about the Spirit-Beasts, their customs, and the way their minds work. The Spirit-Beasts absolutely enrich the story and make it so much more than a simple Goose Girl retelling.

All in all, this book was brilliantly written, and I shall wait with bated breath for the third installment in this wonderful series.

Here we return to skipping Goose girl and going right on into something crazypants and really original. I felt like the thing with Jian is being drawn out for drama, but the rest of the book has a good pace. The plot goes totally off the rails, and it gets weird but not in a bad way.

I did feel sorry that the poor queen is basically down to 2/5 of her family by the end of this plus has a giant tree growing out of the castle. Like, what’s this poor woman going to be expected to deal with next?

This is one of my favorite stories in the world. The characters have gripped my heart and won't let go. I can't wait to read the next book! I read Feathers of Blood in less than 24 hours even though I am a full-grown adult with responsibilities. Go do the same right now! (After reading book 1 of course!)

Would recommend?: hell yes
Would read again? Sure!

Pro: thank you so much for adding scenes with Jian in them throughout and not going all New Moon on us and dumping the male MC in favor for Jeremiah or something. Truly. Thank you. I can’t wait to see Ruo again. I really missed her.

Okay, I’m a sucker for romance. I know this. Book one gave this to me every page. Easily 6/5 stars. Book two has tons of romance and tension, don’t get me wrong. But it also had sooo much world building that I just wasn’t prepared for and isn’t my cup of tea and didn’t seem necessary (yet). I was on the last page and realized this was a trilogy and not a duology so we shall see! I am very excited to see the conclusion. I wish the lengthy world building conversations between Bua’la’mi and Brianna would have been spread out more. I kept putting the book down halfway through but it was worth continuing easily!!

“I felt myself liquefy beneath his heat, and he changed me drip by drip, shaped me so I would never be the same. Too late, I fumbled to solidify the walls that protected my heart. Too late, I remembered the warnings carved into my life from all who had hurt me. But the damage was already done”

“The world had gone mad, so we would go mad along with it.”
