This was recommended to me and given to me by a friend as a book I needed to read; I knew it was something to do with Peter Pan and at first (particularly given my love for Disney) I was a bit sceptical.

When I say this book took everything I knew, threw it up in the air, and let it all come crashing down - that’s not an exaggeration. I thought this was a children’s book - it wasn’t. It gritty, horrifying and at times I genuinely think I held my breath.

My ‘knowledge’ of this book did not ruin it for me one bit. Christina Henry has such a wonderful way of turning a known story into something so real, and so dark! Absolutely blown away.

Christina Henry can do no wrong. At least, not in my eyes. I loved Alice. I loved Red Queen. I loved Lost Boy. Of the three, I think Lost Boy is my favorite. Jamie makes you care about the lost boys. Jamie makes you worry about little Charlie. Jamie makes you hate Peter. I guess I connected in some way with Jamie in his plight of growing up. Jamie struggles with the weight of not being a carefree (or careless?) little boy. "Was this, I wondered, what it felt like to be a grown up? Did you always feel the weight of things on you, your cares pressing you down like a burden you could never shake?" Jamie is a character one can relate to. (Minus the murder... I mean, hopefully minus the murder.) One can relate to his anxieties and his fears. Who isn't afraid of growing up, or losing someone they love, or finding out someone you care about isn't who you think they are?

I loved it. It was awesome.
I'll read anything she publishes.

This was such a surprise.

Peter Pan as a villain I can get behind.
Jamie is a darling.

For the most part, this novel lacked purpose for me.
It's obvious where the main characters emotions are headed but at all times I felt like it lacked depth. It starts to dig into various parts of the plot or emotions, etc. but always just stays on the surface. Which is fine I guess and maybe intended since it's written reminding of a young boys language.
Yet I always felt like it's a little bit chaotic and my mind just couldn't really wrap around what's going on there.

If Captain Hook isn’t your favorite character in Peter Pan after reading this book then I’ll eat a shoe. Reading how a selfish boy’s tendencies turned his once best friend into the villain we’ve always known was a delightful and tragic thing. Monsters are not always born that way, sometimes they are made by those around them.
