I loved many things about this book, the writing style was surprisingly very good, the characters were (mostly) really interesting and fun to read about, the world was also interesting - the idea of everyone having their own daemons and the premise of Dust?

Rating: Somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars?

I... liked it a lot but I didn't love it as much as I expected to? Maybe because I haven't read it as a child/teen and so I don't have any nostalgic feelings toward the series. It is, however, a really cool concept and an extremely adventurous book. The story doesn't drag and the characters are interesting enough (but what's with all the full name business though? Iorek Byrnison, Serafina Pekkala, Farder Coram, etc). There were some really cool aspects to the story, though, and this first book has a lot of potential. I have a feeling the story is going to get a lot better, so I'll make sure to read book two and three asap!

I know this is a highly praised series and most people absolutely love it, but I can't join in the hype just yet. Maybe after I've read book two, because I do really like the storylines and crazy plottwists, and the fact that you don't really know who the villains are because it's pretty complicated. I don't think I would've understand half of it if I'd read this as a 12 year old.

A lot of people think this teaches Atheism. I didn't think so until I read the other two. It really does, and you can get a sense of it in the first book but the last book just gave me a really dark feeling. You also can't really get any more Atheist than what he writes in the third book either. I did enjoy many of the fantasy elements and the style of writing was easy to read but not one I would recommend to anyone.

Didn't come in with any nostalgia but still enjoyed the world Pullman built. Felt like it fell victim to some of the tropes of YA with certain situations being resolved too simply or adults being one dimensional. Also felt like Pullman didn't capitalize on the suspense in a few cases, most notably the ending. Still was able to connect with the characters (really just Lyra and Iorek, no one else really has characterization) and the daemon's were super cute. Curious to see where the rest of the trilogy goes from here
