This was a page turner early on. Lawrence Anthony made you feel involved in all his efforts to save a rogue herd of elephants, and later, his winning their trust.
There were so many incidents that had my heart in my throat - some of which had happy endings and some not.
I learned about how elephants communicate through the rumblings of their stomachs, the look in their eye (the one facing you), and their somewhat telepathic abilities. They reportedly showed up at the house after Anthony died and stayed for two days, much as they would for another elephant who had died.
There were light moments too. Apparently the Zulu people have gallows humor and tease each other. According to Anthony they are great "raconteurs," elaborating their stories of poachers, and sightings of big cats. But it sounds like they were fiercely loyal to the goals at Thula Thula reserve to protect the elephants.
I loved Francoise, his wife and the way the made fun of her French accent.
A thoroughly enjoyable book!

This was a ride! I found some of the accounts hard to believe, but hey, that’s nature and it’s magic for you!

The library gave me the "young readers" edition so I missed about 100 pages of the entire book. That being said - a very inspiring and interesting book and I would have been interested to read the entire edition.

This book was amazing. I expected it to read like a documentary, but it was a story with triumphs and tears, joy and heartbreak. My heart is fuller having read this book.

Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. It was an absolutely amazing story about how Lawrence Anthony literally saved a herd of rogue elephants. I was captivated for the entire book, never wanting to put it down. If you want to read a heartwarming story about the most magnificent creatures on earth- this is a book for you.
