trying my best to be kind as possible in my review because this is author's debut novel but...it's not my cup of tea. i may read it again in the future to further solidify my thoughts but for now, i didn't like it. i can't immerse myself in the world-building because it's more of telling rather than showing, and i didn't like certain aspects of the book (again, i didn't finish this so it might've improved in the later part of the book but from where i was at, i didn't enjoy it). i think the only good thing that came out good/i like is the side couple (not the main one). anyways, my review might change!

was lowkey unimpressed. so much happened and i was still bored?? idk all the characters felt two dimensional, and idk how writing can have the prose be so difficult to read and pretentious but still feel meaningless. i’m sorry author i was rly looking forward to it and glad i supported it but i really was just hoping for something better and more engrossing. don’t think i’ll pick up the sequel tbh

I really wanted to like this book. Some of the world building and plot aspects were exciting and different. But, my god, the writing style took me out of the story on EVERY page.
It’s one thing to keep the tone formal to give the old world vibe but it’s completely another to swap out entirely acceptable terms for “smarter” synonyms in every sentence.
“He is so pulchritudinous that is is painful to look at someone like Laven”
And some of the syntax was just very odd and includes some completely unnecessary clauses , again taking me out of the story to re-read the sentence.
“A large H is what the initial on the gate reads”
“Each close of my eyes soared my mind into sauntering restlessly with irate thoughts, and those irate thought woke me every hour”

If the author does a rewrite of this story for a later edition, I would love to know how the plot progresses, but I won’t be finishing this book.

💫 Thank you so much @thenectarofwarseries & @theleilanihelenaki for an arc in exchange for a review!!

🗡️ My Rating: ✰✰✰✰
⚡️ My thoughts: I really enjoyed this book!! I was immediately drawn into the complex world and magic system with easy-to-root for characters. The writing style made for a smooth read and kept me immersed in the reading. The political intrigue aspect of the plot made for a compelling story. The only reason I took off a star is because I found that with the wide array of characters, it was sometimes hard to keep track of all of them. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this book to fans of From Blood and Ash, ACOTAR, and Fear the Flames!

*contains minimal spoilers with the plot so beware*

As of the early released chapters

Nectar of war is genuinely a page‐turner. Every page will make you want to read more and want more, to find out what will happen next.

I am not a fantasy reader and not really familiar with all the stuff within a fantasy world but Nectar of War was still very entertaining to read. The plot captivated you to read more and the characters are interesting, same with the worldbuilding. Its interesting enough to make you want more.

And I think Leilani Helen Aki's prose is also one of the big factors of what's making you want to read more. Her writing is lyrical but not in a way of metaphors and similes, but in rich detail that makes you visualize the world much more vividly.

The only thing that was lukewarm to me was all due to personal taste like the wolf and mates trope. I think I have associated the wolf trope into something unserious like the twilight or omegaverse lol
So as serious as the scenes and plot are and then suddenly wolves are like taking me out of the serious mood of the book.

*SPOILERS AHEAD WARNING*

SpoilerAnd also the like plague thingy that's happening, I am not quite convinced yet since it feels like a zombie apocalypse in wolf version.
Spoiler

But given that it was only the first 6 chapters anything that I say is not in finality.

But all in all— I am very excited to the full release next year on June 5th if I am not mistaken. I am genuinely excited to what's going to happen next!
