I love this world, and I love these characters. After finishing the Song of the Lioness quartet, picking up this first book in the Immortals quartet is like returning to visit old friends. I really liked Daine and it was so, so wonderful to see Alanna, George, Jonathan and Thayet again! The plot developments are intriguing and I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Had to reread the series since I haven't reread it in a few years. I used to reread it yearly. Still enjoy it. Doesn't matter that it's been 8+ years since I first read the series, it's still a great series and one of my favorite first books of any series. It's a great story and great how it connects back to Songs of the Lioness. Love the series.

This was pretty fun and my inner nine-year-old wishes she'd read it when it could have been very easily incorporated into my intense imaginary play with friends. (Arguably, still could be -- isn't that what D&D is?)

Anyway -- someone should tell Ms Pierce what the orcas have been doing to yachts.

Fantastic pacing, the slow build of Diane’s powers as she travels to and across Tortall and meets our old favorite characters (and then their kids!) is fantastic. Satisfying climax and heartwarming resolution.

I'm very biased by nostalgia, but I love this story of a girl finding/creating a home and family while learning that she has animal magic, with callbacks to many endearing characters from Pierce's previous quartet.

Also, having read about how the first quarter was edited/came to be from (what was originally) a single adult novel, I would argue this book is a bit more evenly paced and answers questions it sets up but also sets the stage for the overarching quartet's conflicts.

Okay so first of all a great re-read for me. I love Daine!

Of all the powers in the Tortall Universe I love Daine's the most. I love that she can communicate with animals!

There was a lot happening in this book. I don't want to get too spoilery but it made my heart pound in excitement, fear and joy.

I love how Daine has made her own home and her own family with some lovely and familiar characters. The last bit where Daine says she goes from no home to too many is just key!

I loved this book yet again! I always feel for poor Daine, losing her mother at such a young age. Her fear that she went mad and that it might return! I love the premise that she can communicate with animals. I always wanted that power! I look forward to the next book!

Update: August 21st, 2016

I never realized before or at least noticed that Daine was so 'country'. She was very surprised and confused by how backwards and relaxed the royalty and nobles were in Tortall. At least she was able to switch to breeches so that she could be more comfortable!

I've always found Daine's magic in particular to be interesting to be able to speak to, heal, and if necessary control animals would be awesome! Oh and how could I forget
Spoilershapeshifting!!!

I always forget the age gap between Daine and Numair. He doesn't seem very old. Just shy of thirty but compared to Daine (13) he is much older. I think that will freak me out a little down the line when
Spoiler they get together.

Thayet and Jon are the coolest and most relaxed rulers. When you read Alanna's series and Kel's series I find myself to be a bit more frustrated with him but in Dain's series he's more relaxed and kind.

I was happy to see the princess, prince and Alann's and George's kids. If I'm not mistaken they don't turn up in any of Tamora's other books so it was nice to see them in this one.

On to the plot.

Daine realized and beginning to understand her wild magic was awesome. I'm also glad that she found a fellow wild magic user (Onua and the hostler) even if they both didn't have near the amount of power that she did.

I always feel bad at the beginning for Daine because she lost her mother and how her mother never told her who her father was. Plus her mother kept trying to test her for the 'Gift' and made Daine feel insecure and inadequate.

The appearance of the immortals was cool. I would hate to meet most of them in real life but the Griffins and the Dragon were awesome!

Carthak is going to be an issue in the next few books so I'm glad that the author didn't overwhelm us too much with that. :)

Still a 5 star book for me after so many re-reads! I'll probably end up reading this again next year!! lol. ^-^

This is probably the best of Pierce's novels, which is pretty sad considering I only think it deserves two stars. I think it's worth reading, but probably more something you'd want to check out of the library rather than spend money on.
