im soooo conflicted on how to rate this book because on one hand the gripping parts GRIPPED ME and on the other the parts that were more boring/ building up clues to connect the dots felt like they took forever and just made me extra confused. BUT FINALLY WHAT I NEEDED TO HAPPEN HAPPENED IN THE MOST AGGRAVATING WAY!! also a time jump hello? and victoria???? im so interested to see how this is all going to wrap up

rating: 3.8-4.5/5

I feel as if the quick takeaway after reading this one is "why?"

The first book was SO strong and the second was fun because of the added complexity of a mystery. But, this one felt like we forced the protagonist into school. And I kept going back to what was the motivation? To deal with "god," or to find Thorn, or to become a virtuoso (simply to prove that you are good enough). The writing is still good at building a world that you want to learn more about. But, I struggled understanding from the writing the motivations of almost all characters (not the antagonists of the protagonists--those made sense given the world that was established).

I also just feel so little was given to the attention that she literally has a NEW POWER. Which I was excited to hear about. I miss the characters of the previous books and the worlds that were built. But, alas, I suppose I'll continue on with dragging feet because I need to see if they actually will have anymore romance in the fourth (or maybe even some demonstrations of power).

J'avais un peu moins aimé ce tome, j'avais l'impression que tout se passait beaucoup trop vite.

Wow! I loved loved loved this book - definitely my favorite in the series.

The Memory of Babel picks up nearly three years after The Missing of Clairdelune ends. Ophelia has returned to Anima with her family and hasn’t heard from Thorn since he disappeared by mirroring out of prison.

Determined to find Thorn, Ophelia has been trying to find any leads that may bring her back to him. When her uncle gives her a postcard of the Ark, Babel, she’s convinced that Thorn is somewhere on the Ark. When Archibald suddenly arrives on Anima by entering through a Compass Rose, Ophelia takes this opportunity to go and find Thorn.

After arriving on Babel, Ophelia attempts to become a virtuoso at the Memorial, which was a building that existed before The Rupture. She’s convinced that within the Memorial is the information that her and Thorn are looking for and in finding this information, she would also find Thorn.

This book asks so many questions throughout the the story - where is Thorn? Who is God? Who is the Other? Where’s Ophelias scarf and who took it? Who killed/injured Mlle. Silence, Prof. Wolf and Mediana? Who is EG? Whose following Ophelia? And while we do get answers to these questions, more questions arise.

We learn that Ophelias theory about Thorn being on Babel was correct. After looking for Thorn is every face she’d pass, she finally finds him when she enters the Secretarium. When alone, Thorn tells Ophelia that he’s working with this group called The Genealogists who have given him the identity of Sir Henry and that the purpose of him working with them is to find a book that possesses the knowledge on how to become Gods equal.

The build up to when Ophelia and Thorn would reunite propelled me to read as fast as I could, and the wait was worth it. I really enjoyed their reunion and the fact that it wasn’t all hugs and kisses. However, when Ophelia told Thorn how she felt about him was 100% worth the wait, especially since it took three books to get there.

“Eulalia was God. Or rather, God had once been Eulalia, before the Rupture. A little storyteller with a mispronounced surname. That didn’t explain either why Ophelia shared her memories or how Eulalia Gonde had managed to create the family spirits, smash the world to pieces, and become, over the centuries, an almost omnipotent Milliface, but it did finally explain how a simple book could enable anyone to become God’s equal. “Because it is he who is anyone’s equal,” Ophelia murmured, stroking the handwritten inscription.”

Fourth book - where are you?? Need the English translation immediately!

Would I reread? 1000% yes

I really don’t know how to feel about this book. The first book left me feeling frustrated, but willing to read more. The second book had me completely captivated and I finally felt that we were getting somewhere with the story line. The third book while having glimpses of intrigue, felt largely like book one to me, while also being completely different. There was more blahing in this book than I cared for. It is crazy to me that all of these books are in a series together.

Book One-the world is broken, everyone has special powers, the Pole is a cruel place, even the people meant to help her are hard and cold, madness.

Book Two-Going from one dramatic event to the next, constantly afraid that Farouk is going to inadvertently hurt Ophelia, terrified of who to trust, so much intrigue, murder, Ophelia marries Thorn in jail, God???, Thorn escapes!

Book Three-relegated to Anima, escape, leaving characters we know and love for a completely new arc-with new rules more new characters, more demeaning be for Ophelia, random snippets of the Pole and God through Victorias eyes, finally finding Thorn, more rigorous bs as in Book 1, God’s protector, Victoria clipped, God in LandmArk, the arcs begin falling apart.

I don’t know what to expect from the final book in this series. Hoping that Thorn and Ophelia will finally have a “relationship”-whatever that means.

Ophelia travels to a new ark in search of answers about God and Thorn, finding instead new mysteries about the rupture and how it came to be.

This book was just as well written and engrossing as the others. The story continued in a balanced way while introducing a new setting as Ophelia is now on a new ark with entirely new ideas and traditions.

I was so excited to read the third installment, finally! I read the first two last year and absolutely did not want to wait. And now I'll have to wait for the fourth book even though it's already out in many other languages!

Highly recommend this series to Fantasy readers.

Another interesting and thoroughly enjoyable addition to the series!

Pros
This story is highly readable… basically I read this 500 page book in two setting.
I finally liked the characters a little bit more!! Something that is severely been lacking in the last two books.
We got a little more romance, but a VERY small amount!!
As always, the world building is incredible, as I’ve said with the other two books, highly imaginative!!

Cons
The plot doesn’t make the most sense, plenty of plot holes, but it doesn’t ruin the story for me.
I really struggle to like Thorn… he’s just so cold and I understand that that’s the point, but I really struggle to connect/care about him.

Overall, wonderfully enjoyable! I’m feeling a little trepidation heading into the fourth and final book in the series. But I’m excited to see how the author, Christelle Dabos brings together this interesting story from an incredibly magical and imaginative land!
