This book was simply deligthful and throughly terrible in that all ones favorite past villians meet up in the same place so there is much absurdity in every chapter as the orphans try to make there way through finding the mystery of their parents, without getting caught by count olaf's henchmen. It is equally terrible in that yet more castrophies happend to them.

on a philosophical note. I found it interesting that the author highlights peoples actions and what one sees as good- the same action could be bad by another but because of circumstances it is seen that way.
It's as if he is saying there are no good and bad people only good and bad choices. Very deep principle for a childs book.

As with all of the books in this series, I enjoyed this story. It's definitely the only book series in which I've read TWELVE books. I felt like the plot of this one was weaker than the others - it's obviously meant to start to tie together the whole story whilst setting things up for the final book, which means not much really happens here. I also missed Violet's inventions.

However, I enjoyed getting some answers and seeing so many characters throughout the series come together, and I liked the new characters introduced. Also, I loved the backwards writing in the book - I did read them in the mirror and felt like I was 7 years old with a spy kit.

Okay, I'm so glad so many characters turned up for this book! Everyone except the Quagmires. Where are they??? Okay, continuing with the final book!

This book has lots of the greatest parts of the second half of the series...the coming of age story of the children, increasingly sophisticated word play, even some literary analysis. The conceit of this entry in the saga is a love letter to libraries, to information, research, and reading, and the author makes explicit that the children's prior successes have been the result of libraries.

Old characters return and the children grapple with the ambiguity of morality, the messiness of real life, and the realization that everyone is the main character of their own story...you never know everything. I felt some of the ambiguity was a little forced (
Spoileraccidentally shooting someone is definitely less bad than shooting them on purpose, even if the end result is the same. And you can accept responsibility for your actions without deeming yourself 'a villain'.

The "lesson" of this story is less clear cut than some of the others...more of a musing than a direct moral. People may not be what they seem. Be careful who you trust. But you must trust. And you can only do the best you can with the information you have.

I want to note that it only just occurred to me while reading this book the true size of a sugar bowl. Because as a kid I was imagining a sugar bowl to be like, the size of a pot. LIke at least 1 litre in volume. Why? Who knows. But I have a distinct mental image of what this sugar bowl looks like and it was only on this reread that I realized I was so very wrong.

So many unanswered questions and so much sadness. Another very good book. I think these books have sined so much more with reading them shortly after each other.  This book also taught child me what penultimate meant.
