This new Middle Grade series is one that you will definitely need to watch out for! Rebel Girls have come out with a fantastic new set of chapter books about women from the past who stood up for rights, fought for change and made a difference in their communities. These chapter books are about 100 pages long, and include multiple full and part page illustrations per chapter. The text is a really good size and is well spaced. The language used is relatively easy to comprehend and is written in narrative form rather than using non-fiction text features. In a way, these books are somewhere between a picture book biography and an early chapter book historical fiction. Between the pictures and the narrative text it will be much facilitate comprehension and keep readers interested. They are super cool and I can definitely think of Middle Grade (Grades 3-7) students who would love these books! There are also fun activities at the end of the book meant to empower and inspire readers to dig deeper, ask questions and learn more about the ideas in the story.
In Dr. Wangari Maathai Plants a Forest readers will learn the story of environmentalist and activist Dr. Wangari Maathai, who became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. It's also a story about the importance of making your voice heard, and using that voice to protect our environment. I think that girls who care about plants, animals and the natural environment will enjoy this book and be inspired to make change in their own communities. I also think it is great that it is a story featuring a black female doctor who is seen as a leader in her field. This book is likely to be an inspiration for young girls, and especially girls who are IBPOC, around the world.
I would highly recommend this book to parents and teachers of Middle Grade readers looking for chapter books that feature inspiring women, teach about history and science and create openings for future inquiry. I will definitely be purchasing this series when it is published so that I can add it to my classroom library! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

Why I read this book- Its world environment day today folks!
Starting from a small village in colonized Kenya to winning Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Wangari Maathai’s story, as depicted in this book, works like a gentle coaxing to every biology enthusiast kid out there. It’s also a reminder to all the successful, grownups-
"What good was it to be big like the elephant or powerful like the leopard if you weren’t going to help when it mattered?"
Filled with beautiful illustrations and all the inspiring milestones Dr Maathai has achieved, top one being starting the Green Belt Movement, this book gives a lingering sense of hope and happiness.
Warning: this is a kid’s book. Do not expect to find the dangerous path Dr Maathai walked to be elaborated here. This is the sweet trailer which one should watch before actually diving into the actual film. Will surely catch upon her autobiography in future!

In the latest installment of their good night tales for girls, the Rebel Girls tell the story of a lady who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 but whose name I don't recognize. She went to school all the way through college despite being a girl growing up in Nigeria whose parents first forbade her from attending. She entered politics after launching various initiatives inspired by her passion for and expertise in the natural world and her native land. The standard additional activities and high-quality images are included.

“We need people in government who want to lead. Not just rule.”
Thanks to Rebel Girls for the ARC!
This book is written for children, but I recommend it to everyone. I'm a huge fan of the Rebel Girls books, because they always bring inspiring stories of strong women, from all parts of the world.
This one tells us about Dr. Wangari Maathai, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist and environmentalist from Kenya. Her life wasn't easy, but she fought against all the odds to save nature, plant more trees and make a better future to all of us.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.
Dr. Wangari Maathai Plants a Forest is a is a biography of Nobel Prize winning environmentalist/activist Dr. Wangari Maathai aimed at middle grade readers. Due out 25 Feb 2020 from Rebel Girls, it's 128 pages and will be available in hardcover and audio formats.
This is a biography which is factually based but also has allowed some (unspecified) changes for narrative flow. I liked learning about her early life and struggles to pursue an education in colonial Africa as a girl from a rural and economically challenged area. She worked for her progresses and when she had failures and setbacks, she picked herself up and tried again. Strength and conviction are a recurring theme in her life and I respect her determination.
Stories with strong and believable female role models are important and welcome for boys and girls. This is a well told biography of a subject who might be unfamiliar to many readers. The art by Eugenia Mello is colorful and engaging and illustrates the story well.
Well done and worthwhile. This would be a superlative choice for classroom, school library, gift, or personal library.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I hadn't heard of Dr. Wangari Maathai before reading this book after being sent it as an advanced read from Netgalley.
I discovered what an incredible woman she was, and how she became a person to admire both from her home country of Kenya and the world when it comes to her education and environmental fight. The book tells us of how a young Wangari Maathai managed to attend school and gain a scholarship which opened so many opportunities for her. I found as always, that the author's of the Rebel Girls series are respectful of what the person has endured. Maathai endured both racism and sexism not only in Kenya, but in America and whilst its spoken about it's done carefully given the age of children these are written for.
The artwork is stunning, and the writing wonderfully done and are complimentary of one another. This series, called The Chapter Books, is going to be a guaranteed success and I'd happily buy them for young children, regardless of their gender as education that is accessible such as these; is important for all.

I'm glad to know more about Dr. Maathai through such a well-told story. It's simple and succinct, yet maintains an honesty and depth that is engaging and inspiring. The illustrations are a vibrant addition that bring Maathai's culture and enthusiasm to life. I look forward to reading more in the Rebel Girls series.

A short story around the life and achievements of Dr Wangari Maathai.
This book was fascinating and presented so nicely. I enjoyed learning more about Dr. Wangari Maathai and her experiences and impact upon the world. I think this is a fantastic way to introduce adults and children to Nobel Prize winners.
