Felt like a cup of tea, and a little sad.

This series has been consistently good for me. William is a brat. Ugh. So glad Lucy divorced him in the first book.

They say there are two kinds of Strout readers: Olive Kitteridge people and Lucy Barton people. If I had to choose I would pick Kitteridge, but please don’t make me choose. I’ve enjoyed returning to both these characters and worlds with Strout in her recent work. She obviously had unfinished business with them, as they did with her. I loved Oh William! Lucy’s voice and Strout’s use of first person narration feel so natural and intimate. I would love to hug Lucy and be hugged by her. She very much needs a hug in this book as she’s recently widowed and helping her first husband process some family secrets he has recently discovered. Oh William! Oh Lucy! Oh Elizabeth! A true delight.

These books are difficult to describe. It's like having a conversation with someone and hearing things you've thought before, but never admitted to anyone, and being relieved it's not just you. It's strong characters that draw you into a seemingly simple story that seems ... small and insignificant, but it's also important and wise. I would say these are emotional and nuanced and the audiobook, as ever, is super. Can't wait to read more.

Oh William follows the acclaimed Lucy Barton series. The books vaguely remind me of the Run Rabbit series by John Updike. Each book follows a group of loosely connected individuals who revolve around Lucy, a writer who is enjoying moderate fame and financial security after a childhood of abject poverty. Now in her 60s, Lucy struggles with recasting her life after the death of her beloved second husband.
I confess that I missed the whole 'you have to read the Lucy Barton series in order' memo and saw this book on a few 'best of 2021' lists, so this was the first one I read
