Full of clichés, sexualized and misogynistic depictions of women, the story is driven by people being unprofessional and incompetent, and you can basically see the "twist" coming from the first quarter of the book on.

Super creepy, super well-written. It's the first snow of the season in Oslo and a woman goes missing. Inspector Harry Hole is working the case and quickly finds a connection to other missing persons and murder cases through the years. While investigating, it soon becomes apparent that the killer chose him in a way, weaving Harry's personal life into his murderous plans. This has been made into a movie coming out soon - can't wait.

There's both a lot and nothing to dissect here. I was expecting more of a psychological thriller, but it followed all of the cliche mystery tropes. Discussion about animal behaviors to muse about human behavior is always hilarious. Each character was one dimensional in their motivations and actions. I guessed the killer a quarter of the way in and then waded through the side suspects. And good God, Nesbo cannot write a woman character to save his life. A woman who is normally cool and calculated has an outburst and then says "sorry, I'm on my period" like are we in the 1800s again? Maybe one day I'll find a decent mystery book that's not Christie or Doyle.

Four stars on the first read, five stars on the second. This is just an extremely well done procedural.

Pulse-pounding, grisly, and twisty, but also overwrought. This has been hyper-lauded, and I can understand some of the appeal. However, I can't help but think the story would have been better served by a measure of restraint.
audiobook note: capably narrated by Robin Sachs, with just the right balance of desperation and menace
