Good wisdom that is timeless. Although some of the advice is a little outdated - organizing your servants and household employees - all of her wisdom is still relevant today. She gave a lot of advice aimed at raising children. Her stories were a highlight for me and I wish she had included more.
If you a fan of Eleanor, you will enjoy this endearing book of her pearls of wisdom.
Aptly, this book was a gift from my mother.

It was interesting to read the former First Lady's perspectives on how to lead a productive, worthwhile life. Her writing style is simple and direct (so yes, sometimes a little dry for me). Her wisdom, gained by her broad life experience and no-nonsense approach, is evident on every page.

October 2017 Book Club,
Good discussion, lots of bits of wisdom that are still applicable today.

This is a homey little book by human rights activist and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This election cycle has been full of sound and fury and nonsense, so when I saw this e-book on sale, I ordered it and read it as an alternative to the current nonsense. And it is just that - practical advice and lessons Mrs. Roosevelt learned over the course of her incredible life. The voice is so down-to-earth - it is like sitting in a comfy chair and having a conversation with your wise grandmother. Nothing earth-shattering, just time-tested wisdom. It was originally published in 1960, so be aware of the difference in cultural mores, etc.

It was a pretty good book & an easy read. Her 11 "rules" are logical and her explanation of them, plausible. They also stand the test of time! She was apparently a pioneer of the "Self-help movement." Although, I believe this would appall her…she was not a fan of psychiatry or therapy. Interestingly, all rules are still applicable to our world today.
Her style is a little dated...even if you didn't know WHO wrote it, you would know it was from a different generation and a different time period. There was a slight tone of an elderly (or mature) school maiden giving advice. Also, some of the references to how women can improved there life were not only dated, but sexist. Proper use of time, included reminding women not to nag their husbands, better to be pleased when he came home and put on a happy face! It was reminiscent of Jacqueline Kennedy’s description (in her recent audio recordings) of how she made JFK happy. Sisters, be grateful for when you were born!
Most of the book was insightful and inspiring. I ordered it after reading My Year With Eleanor (a modern day memoir) and was intrigued by the former first lady. Perhaps, a biography may have been a better choice.

Great points that are still applicable and relevant almost 50 years later! Yes, some of it is dated but the meat of it is still sound.
