REVIEW:

Ugh. Okay, I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but I didn't enjoy this one. I bought it for my Kindle years ago and didn't get around to it until now. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood, I don't know. But it was a complete drag for me to get through.

The setup is good. I enjoy bodyguard romances -- although I will admit I've been enjoying them less lately than I used to. But I liked the premise of this being a big strong man (Jake) protecting his ward (Cami). I liked the setup and I enjoyed their initial interactions.

But I didn't necessarily feel a natural transition from them disliking each other to being in love. Sure, I thought the transition from "hate" to friends was pretty well done. But from there it sort of leaped forward to love too quickly and I just didn't buy it. Especially from Jake, who seemed to go mental for Cami too quickly based on his playboy track record.

I also thought the "secrets" that he has are big, yes, but not so shameful that he shouldn't have shared them with her earlier on. It was dragged out in the story and we (as the reader) are expecting some big awful thing, when really it wasn't something that made him a bad person.

Now, as far as that secret goes, it jumps into a trope I very much dislike in romances -- secret babies/children. I really REALLY dislike this being used in romances and unfortunately I never find out about it until I'm already reading. So yeah, I didn't love that surprise.

Camille was an okay character. She's a pretty open book, which I liked about her. I liked that she's ambitious and down to earth despite her social status. I can't say that I disliked anything in particular about her. Maybe she was a little boring, but overall she was okay.

The suspense side of things wasn't very suspenseful in my opinion. It picked up during the last few pages, but before that, the plot side of things was very slow and dragged on. So not very gripping or exciting.

Overall it was kind of a boring story with bland characters and a mediocre romance. I was not a fan of this one.

I love lemon cake. These erotic, suspensey, romances are my book lemon cake. I will always pick them off the shelf first and read them in one sitting. BUT they must have the standard lemon ingredients. Chemistry and lust, suspense, growling and demanding and protective alpha males and hot, steamy scenes.

'The Protector' had so many of these ingredients and yet there was something quite flat about it. The sponge hadn't risen and become fluffy and welcoming. Sure there was a growling alpha male, but he was too secretive and unemotional for me to get attached to. He spent so much of his POV chapters 'fucking' this and being 'fucked' by that, and constantly whining about how turned on he was without any release, that I just tuned out. Even when he was leaving romantic notes they felt forced for the plot and not a genuine emotional development.
Were we supposed to like Camille? We kept being told that she was more than just this empty-headed, beauty with no substance. But she acted like a child and a diva the whole way through the novel. What I believe was supposed to be spirit and sass was actually more tantrum and being difficult. The whole macho meets model thing could have been great, but it was just repetitive and annoying.

The threats just weren't exaggerated enough for me to be worried at all. The father - who I kept picturing as Donald Trump unfortunately - was so suspect.
Spoiler I kept thinking it was all a big scam for some reason and that the father was making it all up
Camille didn't take them seriously, so I didn't take them seriously. She wants to go out all the time trying to shake her bodyguard? Let her.

Overall I read it, but found the leading couple uninteresting and unemotional and the plot a little too subtle.

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Cami was living the entitled spoiled life. Daddy had money and she was living life to the fullest, him giving in to her every whim.

Jake was hired to protect Cami. Their interest in each other is instant. Jake coming from a completely different backgrounds. Jake has a broken past he's trying to overcome.

There is no doubt this book is filled with suspense, but unfortunately it seemed more suspense driven than anything. There was a lot of build up between the characters but I felt cheated on the getting together. It was a good story but at about 50% in I found myself getting bored. I hate that I didn't like this one more than I did.

My favorite of Jodi's books. The combination of Jake and Camille just made an all around great love story. An alpha with a heart although the ending had me in tears for the misguided choice he made 4 years ago. Really loved this book. One of my favorite of 2016.

I thrifted this book at random and was pleasantly surprised how good it was!

The story revolves around Jake, a rather narcissistic womanizing bodyguard with PTSD, and Camille, the  model and socialite daughter of a grimey business tycoon. Her father hires the former to be her shadow after receiving some anonymous threats to her safety, but things aren’t adding up and something sketchy is going on. There is a lot of sarcastic banter between the two, heaps of sexual tension, and plenty of twists along the way. I found myself quite choked up by the end of the book, but not for the romance plotline as I had expected, there was another element to the story that took me by surprise.

My only real complaints were the number of times I had to read the word “arse” 🙄, and I felt like the climax hit a little late, rushing through all of the action and skipping right into the HEA.

Jodi Ellen Malpas has done it again. She's made me fall in love! I did not want to put this book down!! I knew as soon as I started reading it that I was going to love it.

Jake and Camille are lovable characters. They both have their own personality and they're both strong-willed people. I just adore Camille. She works hard for herself even though she has a dad who would give her the world if she asked for it.

Unless that world consisted of Jake. Even though he hired Jake to protect Camille from possible threats, he didn't want her near him. He definitely didn't want them to end up together.

The only thing that was aggravating was it took so long to get the action parts! But that's completely okay. The super adorable parts make up for it in the end :)

I don't think there will ever be a book by Jodi that I won't like!!

You know, I was really interested in this book when it came out. Every once in a while it's fun to read a fluffy, damsel-in-distress type of book with the big, attractive hero stepping in to save the day. I mean seriously. Look at that COVER! THAT is what I wanted.

This book did not deliver. Throughout the first chapter, all we established was how broken the supposed hero was. Okay, I get it, you're damaged, let's get to the bodyguarding and excitement! NOPE. We basically get 100 pages of both of them sighing over how hot the other one is, or on his end, how they can't be together she's just a job blah blah blah I don't care! Either make a move or move on!! Enough angsting!

Oh and speaking of the job. How are you supposed to protect someone when half the time you're staring longingly and imaging being with them and the other half you're berating yourself because she's just a job?

Anyway, basically, I gave up because he's a possessive alpha who is kind of just a terrible person and she just annoyed me, though her character had some potential. But I just couldn't stick with it. I wanted more mystery, more protecting, more everything. This book did not deliver what that cover promised.

This book was eh. Sometimes I felt like I was just slogging through it. I wanted to love the book, I mean who doesn’t love the thought of a slow burn bodyguard protecting a princess. However, the plot just sped by. We are talking days of knowing each other and they’ve already admitted they’re in love. In addition, I felt like a lot of things were added just for *spicy drama* and it just wasn’t needed. Like why did Jake suddenly have a daughter the last three chapters? Just okay then...
