I had high expectations for this book: Greek Gods and fantastic creatures, near-impossible quest, found family trope, sarcasm and banter. It has it all. But somehow, this book wasn't as amazing as I hoped it would be. Don't get me wrong, the characters are great and the story is good, but I felt like something was missing, a spark to keep me hooked. Maybe it will develop later in the series.

I decided to purchase two of these books. The idea to form a mini book club with my 12 year old nephew during summer vacation, to improve his reading skills and to possibly getting him into the notion of reading for pleasure. I finished the book before him... I couldn't contain myself, it does prompt you to continue turning pages though I had some issues with it. Overall the idea is great, I love the fact that the series is based on greek mythology but there were parts, in particular the beginning and the end that reminded me too much of the Harry Potter series but I wonder was this done on purpose or was it coincidence since it is based on a pre teen boy with "special" powers. I do have to mention that I loved the fact that even though the book is meant for a younger audience, I found that problems that are real in our society are listed in the story in a very clever way and it is possible that a younger audience might not be able to pick these up the same way an adult might, which makes me believe the story is great for young and old. Was it good enough to make me buy the rest of the books in the series? Don't think so. Unless my nephew wants to continue with the book club, I don't think I will continue.

Not my first time reading this nor will it be my last. I’ve started a new folder because of this series: the crutch books. (The books I turn to when I’m v emotionally strained and need a lifeline.)
even though I’ve read this many times before, I’m still gonna WIL/WIDL my way through this.
WIL
1) RR lives in MY CITY! San Antonio Tone-io. The older I get, the more I realize people from San Antonio have a Vibe. Rick has it too and somehow he’s managed to get it across in his writing. It’s a combination of wit, puns, dry humor, and easy-to-understand language I think, plus some other factors I haven’t been able to put my finger on just yet. (I believe I’ve previously referred to this as Rowan-isms, but I think San Antonio Tone-io is a more apt title, at least in this instance.)
2) Annabeth Chase-ing away my anxieties. Annabeth. How I love annabeth. She was my idol for awhile with only a brief reprieve and now she’s back to being my idol again. She’s so smart? So clever? So wily and sure of herself. She’s who I wanna be when I grow up. But she’s still so REAL and she has problems (or “ISSUES” to quote the musical) so I can RELATE and gods I just love her sm.
3) IMPERFECT PROTAG THANK GOD. Didn’t realize how much the perfect protag were bothering me til I came back to this series. Breath of fresh air, this was.
4) realistic THREE DIMENSIONAL characters.
5) concise. God. I’m so bad at writing things concisely. I like to bury my words and my POINT in all kinds of flowery language bc I fear if anyone looks at it too closely they’ll see I’m an IMPOSTER with awful ideas. And so many other authors use this tactic too. We’re all afraid. But Rick is not. How do you do that Rick??? How the heck do you put yourself out there like that?? It’s magic.
6) Greek myth. Flashbacks to reading the Iliad and The Odyssey and discussing it at length in class. Man did I struggle but man did I LOVE it. Rick, you’ve brought me back to my love of the humanities. You’ve re-inflated my soul that was run over by the semi truck that is academic culture. How I’ve missed Greek myth. My friends! All my Ancient Greek friends! Athena and Poseidon and Aphrodite and Ares and-!
7) ADHD representation. My cousin has a lot of trouble in school. She is so SO smart but she just can’t focus. She might have ADHD or dyslexia, or both. So ofc some of the characters remind me of her. I hope she reads this some day. I hope she can see people like her thriving in this wonderful literary world.
8) memories and escapism. The first time (or maybe the second time) I read this I was curled up in a corner at the library, hiding away at lunch time because I didn’t have the “spoons” (as the kids say) to talk to people. I remember it so vividly. I just needed an escape and this book was it. Rick, my man, you’ve done it again. You’ve given me a sorely needed escape. Certain books just resonate with my soul and provide that sanctuary and this book is one of them. This is my calypso’s island.
9) confident character representation. I stg. I S T G. If I read another book (or if I try to WRITE another book) in which the young protagonists are feeling über insecure? I’m not gonna finish it. These kids in this series have such CONFIDENCE. I LOVE IT. they COMMIT to their actions. They act with certainty and THEN think about the repercussions! Amazing! I mean, slightly problematic at times, but also AMAZING. What I’d give to have that freedom of mind!

WIDL
1) nothing. Five stars. I forgot how much I loved this. All the stars. All the love for this entire series.

Really enjoyed this one! This was an amazing start to this series and I can't wait to read more. I absolutely loved how Greek mythology was involved and kept me interested the whole time. Really liked Percy too, but I would like to get to know him better. Just to make sure that He's my favourite.
