I am so taken by this book. Its completely not in my wheelhouse of reading but I am really liking it. I have a million books to read this summer....I love having that problem. What an incredible book...I'm sad that I finished it but luckily it has a sort of sequel (that happens 2 centuries later!!!)

Well written and researched. Someone who I told I was reading this complained about football being mentioned. So, I noticed it when I got to it in the book. I looked it up, and games called football have been played since at least the 12th century, so Follett was correct having a mother say that her son enjoyed football, she just didn't mean what we do.

I actually only started this book and just couldn't get into it. I know everyone says it's great, but it didn't hold my interest.

One of the most frustrating books that I've ever read. Sure, the book has a few good moments, but for most of the 976 pages, I just wanted to reach into the book and kill one of the characters..And if you're ok reading a book like that, then by all means, you'll love this book.

The writing was ok, a bit blunt, but there are just so many characters that were created for no other reason than to make you loathe them, and that didn't make it an enjoyable book. There are very few "good" moments, and every time you seem to like a character, something horrendous happens to them.

Be warned that there are some pretty graphic rape scenes as well..this is a book I would definitely not recommend to anyone.

Here's the deal: there is no reason on Earth for me to like this book. It is insanely long, it is at times somewhat repetitive, the characters' sensibilities are at times absurdly modern, and it is about religion, a human creation for which I have little interest or emotional tie, barring a trace of contempt.

BUT . . . I loved it. I can't help myself. There is something wonderful about it. I could not put it down, and I was sad when I reached the conclusion.

Overall, this book was good, engaging, especialy for a 900+ novel. The criss-crossing of families and events is what made it interesting for me. Overall, an interesting look at the complicated relationship religion and politics have always had with each other and the imperfection of every man, whether religious or no. There was a little more rape and pillage than I typically like in my reads.
