This was the perfect balance of practical yet motivating as a writer. I’m impressed by Febos’ ability to craft something so simple that moved me deeply with its poignancy.

Fantastic work! It's a lovely first piece of inspiration for anyone dipping their feet into memoir writing, though I'm sure anyone who loves learning more about the writing process, the ethics of writing real life, and the psychology of expressing oneself through storytelling will enjoy this. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed her narration as well.

Muutamia sitaatteja muistiin:
"Expressive writing about trauma strengthens the immune system, decreases obsessive thinking, and contributes to the overall health of the writers.”
"[b]ias against personal writing is often a sexist mechanism, founded on the false binary between the emotional (female) and the intellectual (male), and intended to subordinate the former.
"[r]esistance to the lived stories of women, and those of all oppressed people is a resistance to justice.“
"Those who benefit from the inequities of our society resist the stories of people whose suffering is in large past owed to the structures of our society."
"I'll say it again, because it bears repeating: the resistance to memoirs about trauma is always in part - and often nothing but - a reistance to movements for social justice."
"We have been discouraged from writing about it [trauma] because it makes people uncomfortable. Because a patriarchal society wants its victims to be silent. Because shame is an effective method of silencing."

Quick read. It can be read in a day. This book would be useful for someone thinking about writing a memoir. While the writer even says not all memoirs have trauma, this writer has primarily written about trauma. To that end, if your memoir has trauma, this book may also be worth referencing. Primary take away: undo the narrative that we’ve been taught about ourselves. I gave it a 3/5 because besides the above, I didn’t gain much else from it. However, I don’t think I am the intended audience for this book.

An astonishing work that every memoir and creative nonfiction writer needs to read. Not only is it a defense of personal narrative, it's also a philosophy of memoir. The audiobook and it was a quick three-hour listen. I appreciate the brevity and how even at that length it's full of so many gems. It's highly likely I will pick up a physical copy of this book to dog-ear and underline. Whenever anyone questions the worth of memoir or writing challenging personal stories, I will point them to this book. This is the definitive answer to anyone who questions the validity of personal writing.

This was a good book. I actually really enjoyed it. That being said, it was on me, because this book was not what I expected it to be about topic wise. *face palm*
