I always appreciate Jodi Picoult’s willingness to take on controversial topics in an approachable, well-researched way. This book approaches racism, prejudice, unconscious bias, micro , and more- and it’s wrapped in a story that makes it personal. This is a good reminder to me to read Picoult books when they first come out, because I think this one would have been even more impactful had I read it when it came out in 2016.

This book is a crescendo. Slow. Fast. Slow. Fast. It puts you on the edge. As a biracial woman it made me uncomfortable, but there is growth in discomfort. Character growth you're not expecting. Themes that leave you thinking. The ending was a bit flat in comparison to the rest of the book. I wanted it to be drawn out a bit more. I haven't reading another Jodi Picoult book but I liked her style. I listened to the audiobook on Libby and really enjoyed the narrators.

This book was a ride. I really appreciated the 3 different angles it was told from. It was captivating, it was hard to put down. As a white person, it’s a book that made me think and reflect a lot. I appreciate Jodi Picoult’s author’s note and how extensive the research she did for the book was. I think it’s super important as a white author to be able to use your platform to talk about issues such as race.

I’m glad that the story didn’t revolve around white saviourism and that Kennedy didn’t even win Ruth her trial, the case was just acquitted. At first it seemed crazy to me that someone like Turk could end up on the complete opposite of the spectrum but I guess there are people out there like him in the real world.

Would absolutely recommend this book to anyone.
