3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not as good as Ready Player One but I enjoyed it and love the audio by Wil Wheaton - he does such a good job with characters

I went back and forth with this book, trying decide how much I liked it. It held my attention, which is more than I can say for many of the books lingering half read. The story is a good moral tale but leaves a lot to be desired as I felt like I was poking holes in the plot and could basically tell you how it would end about half way through. I felt toes to so many other sci-fi novels of the past, picking up similarities to many a book on my shelves. I liked that. Mr. Cline is a not only an author bit a fan. All that said, it is entertaining and for that, I give it four stars. Unless you despise sci-fi, you'll enjoy it. I feel Mr. Cline left it open for a sequel if he so desires or leave it as is.

This book is not getting much love among my friends, and that's partly because it's impossible not to have super-high expectations for Ernest Cline after reading "Ready Player One." I think we can all agree that "Armada" doesn't live up to those expectations, but I still loved it. Sure, the pacing is a little off, especially at the end where everything is really rushed. The battle scenes ought to have gone through a few more rewrites to be more clear, and the whole thing could have been more polished. But I still thought it was incredibly entertaining. There are some scifi books that feel very realistic, like they could actually happen ("The Martian" comes to mind), while others are ridiculous in one way or another but still a great escape. "Armada" definitely falls into the second category, as it's hard to imagine how the chain of events could go down the way they're described, especially in a single day. But I realized that early on and then just enjoyed the ride, along with Zack's snarky sense of humor.

2.5 stars. Not particularly charming and read like Cline was was just throwing references out there to see what stuck without taking the time to sharpen things up. Predictable plot.

If I had rated this book at the half way mark, it would have been a one star.

I loved Ready Player One. While not the best written book, and cheesy and all that, it was fun. I read it twice and listened to it on tape. When Armada came out and I read the back of it, I was worried it was going to be just like Ready Player One. And all too often, it was. At least at first.

A lot of reviews on here say things like "If you are just wanting RPO again, you will not be happy with Armada." But I was the opposite. I hated the start of this book because it was just like RPO. Wade and Zack are practically the same person. Lex and Arty. I'd even say Og is spread out in a few different people... Similar roles, lives, backgrounds, passions. Random pop culture references that while they made RPO what it was, it just didn't fit in Armada. I felt like Cline was trying too hard to make work what worked so well in RPO.

But then, he kind of changed things in the second half or so. Yeah, it was cheesy. Yeah, it wasn't high literature. But it was fun again, and really that was all I wanted from a book by Ernest Cline.

I was a bit disappointed that it wast quite on par with RPO, but it was still enjoyable.

It wasn't the worst book I have read, but the ending really annoyed me and I don't like it.

Fun idea but so boring overall. Didn't like it at all and was really struggling through it and somewhat the ending did just not reward me for the struggle.
