I am inherently skeptical of books about war, the Holocaust, and racism because I don't need to be told how awful any of them is. However, this book took another course in the talk of racism. It is set right at the time when actual change is happening in homes in the South. It fixes its eye on Jackson, Mississippi and the homes of "genteel" Junior Leaguers and their maids. The perspective looks at both the good and bad sides of this employment and makes me wonder for the first time about a time that I just avoided by being born a number of years too late to observe it.

It was a wonderful story by a first-time author. WHEW, how will she come back as a sophomore?

I resisted this book because there was so much hype, but honestly, I loved it. I know there's been a great deal o controversy (esp. about the movie) but I didn't feel like it was a story about a white woman swooping in to save the black community. I thought it was about an incredibly brave and strong black community who had endured the unimaginable who used the resources this white woman had to give voice to their stories so the rest of the world could hear.

In a word, amazing. But for those wanting more than one word to describe this wonderful book: hilarious, touching, eye opening, unbelievable yet possible, worthwhile reading again and again for years to come.

This book was FAR better than the movie, which was very good itself. Read via audiobook, and the narrators really made it a whole experience, even better than watching the movie.

I enjoyed this book written from the point of view of 3 different women in early 60's south -- these women work together in secret to write a book told by the help about their employers. It's a dramatic plot intertwined with civil rights history.

Well written, and engaging. I will even forgive the author for an (admitted) anachronism that was unnecessary. Put this on your book club's reading list!

okay.
In the beginning I didn’t care for it that much but the tension picked up during the middle so I was sucked in after all and wanted to know the ending. It is a nice idea and message but feels a little bit flat for the serious topic. I feel it could have been more powerful in a different version. I just wanted to read the book they write within the book much more than the actual one.
The author pointed it out herself in the back, but it feels a little strange to read from the pov of black women when the author is not. But I understand that’s what you do in fictional stories… just maybe could have been done in a different way with a similar outcome?
Overall it was quite nice but no masterpiece.
